Student answer (Band 4.0)
In recent times, there is a discussion about improving of people's lives should be the essential aim for science. I completely agree with this statement. There are several reasons for this.
On the one hand, Science should be able to improve people's living period by providing different ideas while doing research. This is because if science improves people's lives then there may be a chance to upgrade the technology. For example,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You state a clear position—“I completely agree”—and begin to give a reason connected to science improving people’s lives. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it does not explain the importance of this aim in sufficient detail, consider supporting examples, or develop a complete argument. The example is left unfinished after “For example,” so the reader cannot see how it supports your view. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, which limits the opportunity to address the question and develop your ideas. To improve, explain at least two reasons, support each with a specific example, and finish with a conclusion that restates your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening gives your opinion, followed by a paragraph introduced with “On the one hand.” The linking phrase “This is because” also signals a reason. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the main point is not fully explained, and the paragraph ends abruptly at “For example,” without providing the promised illustration. “On the one hand” also suggests that a contrasting point will follow, but none appears. Use a clear sequence—introduction, developed reason paragraphs, and conclusion—and make sure each linking expression accurately reflects the relationship between ideas. Completing each paragraph would make the organisation more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Your vocabulary communicates the general topic, using relevant terms such as “science,” “research,” “technology,” and “improve people’s lives.” There is also an attempt to use more formal phrasing, including “essential aim.” However, the range is limited in this short response, and some word combinations are unnatural or imprecise. For example, “improving of people’s lives” is not a natural construction, while “living period” does not clearly express the intended idea of lifespan or quality of life. “Different ideas” is also too vague to explain what scientific research provides. Choose precise topic vocabulary and learn it in natural combinations, such as “quality of life,” “medical advances,” and “develop new technologies.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You use both simple sentences and a longer conditional structure, as in “if science improves people’s lives then there may be a chance to upgrade the technology.” This shows an attempt to vary sentence forms, and the main position is understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “there is a discussion about improving of people’s lives should be,” the clauses are not joined correctly; you could write “there is discussion about whether improving people’s lives should be…” The opening also shifts awkwardly between “there is” and “should be.” Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Science” after “On the one hand.” Practise forming complete clauses and checking sentence boundaries, articles, and capital letters before submitting.
