Student answer (Band 6.5)

SCIENCE PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIETY. SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THE FIRST AIM OF SCIENCE SHOULD BE TO IMPROVE PEOPLE'S LIVES. I AGREE WITH THIS VIEW BECAUSE SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT CAN IMROVE HEALTHCARE AND MAKE PEOPLE'S DAILY LIVES EASIER.

FIRSTLY, SCIENCE HAD A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO HEALTHCARE. SCIENTIST HAS DEVELOPED MANY MEDICINES, VACCINES, AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENTS THAT HELP PREVENT SERIOUS ILLNESS AND DISEASE. IN THE PAST, SOME ILLNESS IS DIFFICULT TO TREAT, BUT NOWADAYS, DOCTORS CAN USE ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY AND MEDDICINE TO SAVE PEOPLE'S LIVES. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE PAST, SOME DISEASE SUCH AS DENGUE AND MALARIA ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO TREAT, BUT IN RECENT YEARS, DUE TO DEVELOPMENT IN MEDICAL SCIENCE, SCIENTIST DEVELOPED VACCINES AND MEDICINE FOR THIS ILLNESS AND USE TO SAVE PATIENT'S LIVES.

SECONDLY, SCIENCE HAS MADE PEOPLE'S LIVES MORE CONVENIENT. MODERN TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE COMMUNICATION, TRANSPORTATION, AND HOUSEHOLD ACTIVITIES EASIER. FOR INSTANCE, PEOPLE CAN COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS USING SMARTPHONES AND INTERNET WITHIN SECONDS, EVEN WHEN THEY LIVE IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. MODERN TRANSPORTAIN SUCH AS TRAIN, AND FLIGHT CAN COVERED LONG DISTANCE IN MINUMUM TIME AND CAN SAVE TRAVELLING TIME. ADDITIONALLY, PEOPLE CAN USE ROBOTS TO DO THEIR HOUSEHOLD WORKS LIKE CLEANING, WASHING AND BASIC TASKS.

TO CONCLUDE, ALTHOUGH SCIENCE CAN ALSO BE USED TO PERFORM OTHER IMPORTANT TASKS SUCH AS UNDERSTAND NATURAL WORLD AND DEVELOPED NEW IDEAS. I BELIEVE THAT SCIENCE SHOULD BE FOCUS MORE TO DEVELOPE PEOPLE'S LIVES. SCIENTIFIC IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTHCARE AND TECHNOLOGIES HAS MADE A SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE DIFFERENCE TO SOCIETY

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that science should prioritise improving people’s lives, and the conclusion restates this view. You address the prompt with two relevant reasons—healthcare and everyday convenience—and support them with examples such as vaccines, smartphones and transport. This gives the response a clear, relevant argument. To develop it further, explain the examples more precisely and connect them explicitly to why improving lives should be science’s most important aim. For instance, the discussion of dengue and malaria makes a broad claim about vaccines and treatment without explaining a specific impact. You briefly acknowledge other scientific purposes in the conclusion, but could weigh these against your main position to make the argument more fully developed and nuanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from healthcare to convenience is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “For example,” and “To conclude” help readers understand the stages of the argument. Within the paragraphs, examples generally follow the point they illustrate. To make the organisation more fluent, rely less on formulaic transitions and strengthen links between individual claims. The healthcare paragraph, for example, moves from past treatment difficulties to diseases and vaccines, but the relationship between these points could be made more explicit. The final sentence also adds a further summary after the conclusion’s main point; integrating it would give the ending a more controlled finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “healthcare,” “vaccines,” “medical science,” “communication,” and “transportation,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at topic-specific language, such as “household activities” and “scientific development.” However, the range and control are limited by repeated general words such as “people,” “lives,” and “science,” as well as inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations. Examples include “medical equipments,” “advance technology,” “modern transportain,” and “minimum time.” These errors sometimes make the phrasing awkward, even when the intended meaning can be inferred. Build a more precise vocabulary for describing outcomes and use standard collocations; proofreading spelling and checking whether nouns are countable will also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “although” and clauses introduced by “that” and “when.” This allows you to express reasons and examples, but control is inconsistent, and errors recur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “Scientist has developed” needs a plural subject and matching verb, while “can covered” and “can be focus” use incorrect verb patterns. The conclusion begins with an “Although” clause but does not complete the contrast as a full sentence. These problems can make some relationships less clear. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and modal verb patterns, and revise each sentence to ensure subordinate clauses are attached to a complete main clause.
