IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People's lives are improving everyday by science. I partly agree with this statement because science plays a crucial role in making communication easier and faster. However, I disagree as well because technology negatively affects people's lives in many ways. In this essay, I will discuss both views before reaching a conclusion.

On the one hand, I believe that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives as it makes communication easy. For example, in the past, individuals contacted with their relatives only by letters and it took weeks and even months to deliver a message. However, today smartphones allow people to contact with their relatives and friends on video calls around the world. People can contact with their close ones at anytime and anywhere in the world. Therefore, digital devices improve a quality of life.

On the other hand, I think that the technology impacts individuals' lives in a negative way. Different AI apps such as ChatGpt limits people thinking ability and they are relying on these apps for their general questions. For example, if a person has headache, everyone knows to treat it by medicine or moniter bp. While younger generation opens AI app to answer their basic question which limits their thinking abilities. Consequently, relying too much on the technology reduces people independent-thinking and problem solving skills.

In conclusion, although science improves quality of life by making connection easy globaly, I believe it has negative consequences as excessive use of AI apps. From my perspective, people should adopt a balanced approach such as use these types of digitial devices only for a particular purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses the question and presents a clear, partly agreeing position: science can improve life through communication, but technology can also have negative effects. The two body paragraphs give relevant examples, including video calls and reliance on AI apps. However, the discussion is unevenly developed. The communication example explains the benefit clearly, while the AI example makes a broad claim about reduced thinking skills without exploring its consequences or acknowledging how AI may also help people. The headache example is also not fully convincing as evidence. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely what science’s most important aim should be and develop both sides with balanced, specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the central position remains understandable. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the linking can feel mechanical, and some connections between claims and examples need clearer development. For instance, the headache example shifts quickly from treatment to using an AI app, so the relationship to independent thinking is not fully explained. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between ideas, and make each example lead clearly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss science, communication and technology, including phrases such as “crucial role,” “quality of life” and “problem solving skills.” The meaning is generally clear, but the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “contacted with,” “making connection easy globaly,” “limits people thinking ability” and “digitial devices.” Some expressions are repeated, particularly “people’s lives” and “contact.” Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of topic vocabulary, such as “stay in touch,” “enhance well-being” and “over-reliance on AI.” Proofread spelling and word forms so that errors do not distract from your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses beginning with “although” and “because,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, possessives and sentence construction. For example, “Different AI apps such as ChatGpt limits” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “reduces people independent-thinking” needs a possessive form and a more accurate grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “While younger generation opens…” is a fragment because it does not connect to a main clause. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and article use, and ensure every subordinate clause is attached to a complete sentence. Greater accuracy across these structures would make the argument smoother.
