Student answer (Band 6.0)

The main aim of science should be to better people`s life. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks and I totally agree with the statement, If it works for improving medical facilities and securing basic resources such as water and food.

Science can be used for facilitating hospitals with advanced technology and help diagnosing diseases. This will lead to much easier diagnosis and treatment while saving time which would have been spent in collecting blood samples then sending them to labs and waiting almost a week for the results, when all of this can happen within a day now. For example; laser advancements in dermatology have made it easier for burnt patients to get reconstructive surgery eaiser and less time taking. Similarly, dental clinics are can also introduce digital scanning of mouth within seconds in the clinc with such devices.Modren technologies can be installed for water filteration which recycle water preventing waterborne diseases while food improvements can also occur by advancements in agricultural machines and equiments or maybe using genetical modified seeds.

Although, it has many pros some of the cons are increased climate change which can occur because of industrial advancements, burning fossil fuels leading pollution. Pollution is harming many lives. Another main disadvantage is destruction of habitat by clearing land and cutting down trees and forests for constructing industrial units. Animal life is suffering as a result and they are become extinct eventually. For example; water pollution is affecting aquactic life.

Hence,in my view the advantages outweigh diadvatages if used with proper management and taking environmental measures.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that science should improve people’s lives, particularly through healthcare and access to essential resources. The examples of faster diagnosis, reconstructive surgery, water treatment and agricultural technology are relevant, and you also recognise environmental costs. This covers the task, but the discussion is uneven: the benefits receive several examples, while the drawbacks are listed more briefly and the conclusion only says that advantages outweigh disadvantages with proper management. The opening also promises to discuss “benefits and drawbacks,” although the question asks how far you agree, so the response could focus more directly on the extent of your agreement. To develop the argument further, explain why improving lives should be science’s primary aim and how environmental safeguards can address the harms you identify.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages and a concluding position. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “Although” and “Hence” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the benefits paragraph contains several distinct examples in a long sequence, making the progression feel crowded; the shift from healthcare to water and food could be signposted more clearly. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, particularly “Although, it has many pros some of the cons are…” and the final reference to “proper management.” Use clearer topic sentences and divide related examples into a more deliberate order. More precise referencing and less mechanical use of transitions would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt relevant topic vocabulary, including “advanced technology,” “diagnosis,” “fossil fuels,” “habitat” and “waterborne diseases,” which gives the response some range. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and sometimes interrupt reading: “eaiser,” “Modren,” “filteration,” “equiments,” “genetical modified,” “diadvatages” and “aquactic” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “facilitating hospitals with advanced technology” and “less time taking.” Choose accurate collocations and check spelling carefully, especially for technical terms. You could also vary repeated general words such as “improvements” and “advancements” with more precise language. These changes would make your meaning clearer and your vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, including a relative clause in “time which would have been spent…” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some sentence structures and grammatical forms are faulty. For example, “dental clinics are can also introduce” contains competing verb forms, while “they are become extinct” has an incorrect verb construction. The opening sentence also joins a capitalised “If” to the preceding clause inappropriately, and several long sentences need clearer punctuation. Practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause, then check subject–verb agreement, verb forms and clause boundaries. Greater control would make the argument smoother and more accurate.
