Student answer (Band 5.5)
Science plays an important role in people's lives. The most significant aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I strongly agree that science should be use for good things. The some main reasons why science aims should be to improve people's lives will be dicuss in the essay.
Now, turning to the details, Many people believe that science should be use for making people's lives easier. The most signficant reason is medical treatment through science. Science helps a lot of researchers in finding the best cure for medical diseases. It cures a lot of people from diseases. In addition, science also helps NASA to take first step on the moon. For example, Corona's vaccine was produced by many doctors by using science.
Furthermore, science should be use for advance technology. Technology become essential in everyone's lives. People are addicted to technology, such as mobile phones, social media and aritficial intelligence. By contrast, Technology has bad impacts on people's lives, such as misuse of artificial intelligence. However, it can be prevent through better safety and taking pre-cautions. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear in the opening: you strongly agree that science should improve people’s lives, and you give relevant examples involving medical treatment, vaccines and technology. However, the response only partially develops the task. The medical point is repeated in general terms (“It cures a lot of people”) rather than explained with a specific example, while the reference to NASA and the moon is not clearly connected to improving people’s lives. The discussion of technology’s risks and safeguards is relevant, but the example about creating images with ChatGPT is unclear. The response is also 8 words below the required minimum. Develop fewer points with clearer explanations and examples, and make the conclusion reinforce your position directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs broadly group related ideas, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “However” and “To conclude” help readers follow the direction. This coherent arrangement supports the discussion. At times, though, progression is weakened by repetition: the claim that science improves lives and the need for precautions against misuse appear more than once without adding much detail. Some links between ideas are also abrupt, particularly the move from medical treatment to NASA within the same paragraph, and “By contrast” does not clearly express the relationship between technology’s benefits and harms. Use more precise transitions and develop each paragraph around one connected main idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “medical treatment,” “researchers,” “vaccine,” “artificial intelligence” and “misuse,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, limiting precision. For example, “science should be use for good things” is vague, “advance technology” is not the natural form, and “cures people from diseases” is awkward. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “dicuss,” “signficant” and “aritficial.” Aim to use more precise phrases for scientific benefits and risks, and check spelling and word forms carefully. This would make your ideas clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate your main ideas using mostly simple sentences and make some attempts at more complex structures, such as “However, it can be prevent by taking pre-cautions.” The range remains limited, and errors occur often enough to affect clarity. Examples include “science should be use” and “it can be prevent,” where the passive verb form is incorrect, and “Technology become essential,” which has a subject–verb agreement error. “The some main reasons” also shows difficulty with articles and determiners. Capitalisation is inconsistent, as in “Many” after a comma and “Technology” mid-sentence. Practise accurate passive forms, agreement and sentence boundaries, then combine ideas into longer sentences while maintaining control.
