Student answer (Band 6.5)

Scientists are researching different domains now a days such as medicine, latest technologies and universe. I strongly believe that improving the life of people should be the most crucial goal of science because aiming to make people's life better will eventually cover many aspects of science.

The most essential aim of science should be providing better health facilities to people. Many deathly diseases are increasing due to advancements and poor diet as people are not strong enough to fight them. Science should research about medicines and vaccines that can save life of human beings. Additionally, many new life-taking viruses has been discovered in the past few years such as corona virus. For instance, in 2019 corona virus took life of millions of people but it was due to science that we were able to make a vaccine that saved people's life.

Furthermore, pollution is also increasing day by day that is heavily affecting people's life. In many countries, the air quality is very hazardous such as Pakistan and India. People are unable to breath in this air especially in the winters as the polluted air get mixed with fog. Some studies should be carried out to make the air better for the humans. As per a study, breathing in bad air quality can reduce a person's life and is similar to smoking cigarettes. Pakistan has taken some actions in this regard. For instance, regular sprays are done in winters to improve the air quality and banning the cars that are very old and polluting the environment.

To conclude, scientists have a lot of fields to research. However, I believe that human life and ways to make it better is the most important area because it indirectly includes environment and medicine which cover almost the essential domains of science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be science’s main aim, and the conclusion maintains this view. You support it with two relevant areas—health and pollution—and the examples of COVID-19 vaccines and air pollution in Pakistan help make the discussion concrete. This addresses the task and extends the main ideas, although some claims are broad or not fully explained. For example, the link between scientific progress and “many deathly diseases” is unclear, and the discussion of winter sprays and banning old cars could explain more directly how scientific research informs these measures. Develop these links and qualify general claims to make the support more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs focused on health and pollution, and a conclusion. “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” signal the stages of the argument, and the examples generally follow the points they support. This gives the essay a coherent progression. However, some linking is mechanical, and connections within paragraphs are not always precise. For instance, the move from diseases to “advancements and poor diet” is not clearly explained, while the final sentence groups environment and medicine together without showing how they relate to the central claim. Use transitions that express the exact relationship between ideas, and make each paragraph’s reasoning progress step by step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your argument, including “vaccines,” “viruses,” “air quality,” and “polluting the environment.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “hazardous” and “life-taking.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “deathly diseases” would be better expressed as “deadly diseases,” and “life-taking viruses” is not a natural collocation. Phrases such as “latest technologies,” “make the air better,” and “fields to research” are also broad or awkward. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating general words such as “life” and “better”; this will make the argument sound more fluent and appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because aiming to make people’s life better…”) and a conditional-style explanation (“as the polluted air get mixed with fog”). Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems persist, however. For example, “many new life-taking viruses has been discovered” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “people’s life” and “save people’s life” need plural forms. There are also article and sentence-construction issues, such as “the most essential aim… should be providing” and “ways to make it better is.” Review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, and check that each sentence’s subject matches its verb.
