Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, there is an ongoing debate about that the main aim of the science is to improve the people's lives. I disagree with this view because scientist do research not to improve the people lives but sometimes it can help to deal with problems like global weather changes.

One of the main reasons why science is important in this modern world, especially in the all the sectors. Many people can now easily communicate with other people all around the world, because of the invention of mobile device technology. With the help of satellites, many countries are able to cope with weather problems like they can detect the weather situations early. As a result, science can be useful in medical field also, like doctors can use the highly advanced machines to cure the patients very fast.

Another important reason is that it can be useful for making the builduings and road construction

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

Your response gives a clear disagreement and includes relevant examples, such as communication through mobile technology, weather forecasting and medical equipment. However, it only partially answers the question: these examples show ways science can improve lives, but you do not explain why improving lives should not be science’s most important aim, or identify other aims that you consider more important. The final point about buildings and road construction is unfinished and unsupported, so the argument is not developed. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, leaving too little space to explain and support your position. Develop a consistent argument, address the wording “most important aim” directly, and extend each reason with explanation or a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, a paragraph with examples, and a final paragraph beginning a second reason. Linking phrases such as “As a result” and “Another important reason” help signal relationships between ideas. However, there is no clear overall progression in the argument, and the final paragraph stops before its point is explained. The first body paragraph also moves from communication to weather forecasting and then medicine without showing how these examples support your disagreement. Some connections are unclear, including the relationship between the opening claim and the examples that follow. Organise the essay around distinct reasons, use each paragraph to explain one reason, and make the links between examples and your position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “satellites,” “weather situations,” “medical field” and “advanced machines,” so the reader can identify the areas you are discussing. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or awkward, which reduces precision: “the all the sectors,” “weather situations,” and “cure the patients very fast” do not express the ideas naturally. There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “builduings.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary the vocabulary used to describe science’s purposes and effects. For example, explain whether research contributes to public welfare, expands knowledge, or addresses practical challenges, rather than relying on broad or repetitive wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences using clauses and connectors, as in “because of the invention of mobile device technology” and “With the help of satellites…”. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response difficult to follow. The opening phrase “there is an ongoing debate about that” has an incorrect clause pattern, while “One of the main reasons why science is important in this modern world, especially in the all the sectors” is a sentence fragment. Agreement and possessive forms also need attention in “scientist do research” and “the people lives.” Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, plurals and possessives before finishing.
