IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The major important aim of science is to improve people's lives in day to day activities.
I agree that science plays an important role in improving people's lives by research and innovations carried out by the department. It helps in finding new solutions to the existing issues of human mankind by inventing cures of the deadly deseases such as cancer, TB and diabeties.
Without the help of science I think it is impossible for a nation to grow on its own.
Not just in medicines but also in other sectors, science plays an important role in upbring that specific industry.
Let's take the aerospace industry as an example, in this sector without the help of science it is almost impossible to have a success. Anything that is connected to human lives have the direct or indirect impact on science.
Although ancient humans have survived without having any knowledge of science in their lives but they couldn't adapt for a longer period of time. Science helps in the growth of the human lives by supporting them medically to tackle the deseases which are deadly in nature, with the help of an antidote or a vaccine the human body can fight by having strong immunity.
I want to give a personal reason that made me agree to the statement that the most important aim of science is to improve people's lives.
One of my relatives were effected by a major health problem, after many natural remedies he turned towards medical support which made him heal slowly and steadily. Moreover, it wasn't a quick recovery but it was a long process to fight his battles with the virus.
Science helped him in fighting along side by providing medicines and antidotes that he required.
Furthermore, I would like to say that the science is very important in human lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that science should prioritise improving people’s lives, and you support this with examples from medicine and aerospace, as well as a personal account of a relative’s recovery. These points are relevant and address the question. However, some are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that ancient humans “couldn’t adapt for a longer period of time” is unclear and does not show precisely how science improves lives. The aerospace example is also brief, and the essay does not consider whether science might have other important aims. Develop each example by explaining its impact and connect it directly to your view; this would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from your position to examples and then a personal experience. Paragraph breaks help separate the main points, and transitions such as “Although,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” show attempts to connect ideas. However, progression is not always clear: the paragraph about ancient humans introduces a broad claim without linking it closely to the preceding aerospace example or the overall argument. Several sentences repeat the general point that science is important, especially in the opening and conclusion. Some linking phrases are used mechanically, and the personal example is split across several short paragraphs. Group related ideas, use clearer references between them, and make the conclusion synthesise rather than repeat your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “research,” “innovations,” “aerospace industry,” “vaccine,” and “immunity,” which helps communicate your main ideas. However, the range is limited in places, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “major important aim,” “human mankind,” “upbring that specific industry,” and “fight his battles with the virus.” Spelling errors in “deseases,” “diabeties,” and “effected” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but they make parts less natural and precise. Build a bank of topic-specific collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a conditional construction beginning “Without the help of science.” Most of the main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “One of my relatives were” should use a singular verb, while “the science” is not appropriate in “the science is very important.” The sentence beginning “Let's take the aerospace industry as an example” is followed by a comma splice, and “Anything that is connected to human lives have” has a subject–verb agreement error. Review these patterns and punctuate joined clauses correctly; more accurate control would make your argument easier to follow.
