Student answer (Band 5.0)
I agree with the statement that the main function of science is to study and improve people's lives. Science is the fundamental core of everything in life. It is used everywhere and/or by everyone from a Scientist working in NASA to a man selling dragon's breath on the streets of Pakistan. Without science, we wouldnt know anything about the planet we live in or even what our human body is consists of. Science aves lives in the form of Doctors as well. The main aim of Science should be to improve people's lives. Yes, science can make endangered animals comeback to life. Yes, science can send a human to outer space. But, the most important thing on Earth is a human life. And science can make a human life more valuable.Science should constantly research new ways on how a human life can be improved. Science can improve people's lives by providing a way which gives access to clean drinking water to all 8 billion people on earth. Over 1 billion people around the world dont have acess to safe, clean drinking water. Science can make technological advancements on providing safe, clean drinking water accessible even in the slums of Ethiopia. Science should experiment more on human genes and know more about the human body. In conclusion, science can get ahead with technological advancements in every aspect. But it's main aim should be to improve the lives of their biggest asset, Humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you agree that improving human life should be science’s main aim, and you give relevant examples involving medical care and access to clean water. The discussion of water scarcity is the most specific support, while claims about researching genes and improving lives are mentioned but not explained in depth. The brief references to reviving endangered animals and space travel help establish your priorities, but the essay does not fully explore why these goals should be secondary. The response is also 11 words below the required minimum. Develop each main reason with explanation or a concrete example, and make the comparison between human welfare and other scientific aims more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable progression from your position to examples and a concluding statement, and phrases such as “In conclusion” signal the ending. However, the ideas are presented in one continuous block rather than organised into clear paragraphs, so the reader has little visual guidance. Several short statements beginning “Yes, science can…” create a repetitive, list-like sequence, and the shift from medical care to endangered animals, space travel, and clean water is abrupt. Some links between claims are also unclear. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, each main reason, and the conclusion; then connect examples to the point they support with clear transitions and references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “endangered animals,” “outer space,” “human genes,” and “clean drinking water,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “improve people’s lives” and “science can.” Some word choices and collocations are awkward, such as “the fundamental core of everything in life” and “make a human life more valuable.” Spelling errors, including “aves,” “wouldnt,” and “acess,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check spelling carefully; vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives such as “enhance well-being” or “advance medical knowledge.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate your main position using mostly straightforward sentence patterns, and there are attempts at longer structures, such as “Science can improve people’s lives by providing a way which gives access…” However, the range is limited, and errors in these attempts sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “what our human body is consists of” has an incorrect verb construction, while “their biggest asset, Humans” has unclear agreement and punctuation. The sentence beginning “Science should constantly research new ways on how…” also uses an awkward grammatical pattern. Practise building accurate complex sentences with clauses such as “by developing methods that provide…” and check verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence punctuation.
