IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science plays a crucial role in the daily lives of people and it has brought many changes in the world. I strongly agree that the main aim of science should be to important people's lives beacuse it helps us to live healthier and more comfortable lives.
The first reason is that, science has greatly improved medical treatment. In the past, many people died from diseass becasue proper treatment and effective equipments were not available. They used to treat illnes by theriself. However, scientist have developed many vaccines and medicines and advaced treatments that help doctors to diagnoes and treat illnes. For example, modern technology allows doctors to detect serios issues in early stage, so patients have a better chance to recover quickly. Due to science, people have opportunity to improve their life style.
Another important benefit is that science has made our daily lives more easier. Modren inventions, such as washing machines, kitchen items, smartphones and computers save time and effort. Moreover, internet allows people to communicate with freinds and family. For instance, students can watch educational vedios and learn new skills without travelling to another place. Furthermore, internet provides online meetings to buisness. They can promote their business by using smart skills on smartphones. They can also earn money through advertisements. Therefore, science provide more opportunity for people to live heathier lives.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that improving people's lives should be tha most important aim of science. Although, scientific research can have other purposes, its great value lies in improving health, saving time and making education more easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly agree that science should prioritise improving people’s lives. You support this with relevant points about medical advances and everyday technology, including vaccines, early diagnosis, household appliances and online learning. These examples address the task and make the response persuasive in outline. However, the two main ideas are not developed equally: the medical paragraph explains how treatment improves survival, while the technology paragraph shifts among communication, education and business without fully explaining how these benefits support your central argument. To strengthen the response, explain the significance of each example and connect it explicitly to people’s wellbeing. Your brief acknowledgement that research can have other purposes could also be developed to show more fully why improving lives should take priority.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from medical benefits to everyday convenience is logical, and signposts such as “The first reason,” “Another important benefit” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from household inventions to communication, education and business. The relationship between these examples is not always made explicit; for instance, the business point about advertisements feels detached from the claim about healthier lives. Group related examples and add clearer explanations of how each supports the paragraph’s main idea. More varied, precise transitions and clearer referencing would make the cohesion smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “medical treatment,” “vaccines,” “modern technology,” “communicate” and “educational videos.” This is enough to convey the main ideas, but the range and control are limited, and repeated general words such as “people,” “lives” and “science” make some points less precise. Several spelling errors—such as “diseass,” “becasue,” “Modren” and “freinds”—are noticeable, while phrases including “smart skills on smartphones” and “kitchen items” are unclear or imprecise. These issues sometimes make the reader pause to interpret the intended meaning. Build a bank of accurate topic-specific expressions and check spelling carefully; choose precise collocations rather than combining familiar words in unnatural ways.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “inventions … that help doctors” and a result clause beginning “so patients have a better chance.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “the main aim … should be to important people’s lives,” “scientist have developed,” “internet allows,” and “science provide,” where verb forms or subject–verb agreement are not controlled. There are also problems with articles and comparative forms, as in “in early stage” and “more easier,” and punctuation is inconsistent in “Although, scientific research” and “health, saving.” Practise checking agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
