IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Science plays an important role in our daily lives. Some people believe that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I strongly agree with this statement because science helps us improve healthcare, education, and our standard of living.
Firstly, science has made great improvement in the medical field. In the past, many people died from diseases because there were no proper treatments. However, nowadays, doctors can use modern machines, medicines, and vaccines to treat many illnesses. For example, X-rays and other medical technologies help doctors identify diseases and provide better treatment. As a result, people can live longer and healthier lives.
Secondly, science has made our daily activities easier and more comfortable. We can communicate with people around the world through smartphones and the internet. Students can attend online classes and learn new skills from their homes. Similarly, farmers can use modern machines to grow more crops in less time. These developments save time and improve people's quality of life.
However, some scientific discoveries can also have negative effects. For instance, weapons developed through scientific research can cause destruction, while factories and vehicles can contibute to pollution. Therefore, Scientists and government should ensure that scientifc developmwnts are used responsibly and for the benefit of society.
In conclusion, I complelely agree that improving people's lives should be the most important aim of science, Although scientific progress can sometimes create problems like weapons development, while its benefits in healthcare, education, research and everday life if we used properly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly agree that improving lives should be science’s main aim. You address the prompt with relevant reasons, including medical advances, communication and learning technology, and agricultural machinery. The examples of vaccines, X-rays, online classes, and farming equipment help support your points, while the paragraph on weapons and pollution acknowledges possible drawbacks. This covers the task and develops the main ideas, although some claims remain broad—for example, the benefits of smartphones and the internet are asserted rather than illustrated with a specific effect. The conclusion also introduces research without explaining its relevance. To strengthen the response further, develop one or two examples in more detail and connect the counterargument explicitly to your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, separate paragraphs present supporting reasons and a qualification, and a conclusion returns to your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the progression clear. Within paragraphs, examples generally follow the claims they support. The main weakness is the final sentence, where the ideas are joined in a way that disrupts the conclusion: “Although scientific progress can sometimes create problems … while its benefits …” leaves the relationship between the contrast and your final point unclear. Aim to make the conclusion a complete, direct summary, and use linking phrases less formulaically where the relationship between ideas is already evident.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “medical field,” “vaccines,” “quality of life,” “scientific research,” and “pollution.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and some topic-specific terms help make the examples relevant. However, several expressions are broad or repetitive, such as “improve people’s lives,” “modern,” and “better,” so more precise wording would give your arguments greater flexibility. There are also spelling errors, including “contibute,” “scientifc,” “developmwnts,” “complelely,” and “everday.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more accurate collocations would improve control. For instance, “made great improvement” is less natural than “made significant advances.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled effectively, such as “As a result, people can live longer and healthier lives” and “Students can attend online classes and learn new skills from their homes.” The use of contrast and cause-and-effect structures also shows some range. However, some errors affect accuracy, particularly in the conclusion: “Although …, while its benefits …” creates an incomplete and confusing sentence, and “if we used properly” has an incorrect verb construction. There are also issues with capitalization and punctuation, such as “Scientists” after a comma and the comma before “Although.” Work on forming complete clauses and checking that conjunctions connect grammatically compatible ideas; this will make your varied structures more reliable.
