Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think the primarily purpose of science should be to make people's lives easier. As the invention of machines reduced the mannual workload and let the machine do heavy lifting, it is quite evidant advancements in science help to increase easyness in daily routine. But the main aim of science is discover the underlying truth which can be used to invent products that can lead to better lifestyle.

Science is the main source behind all the inventions. Scientists first evaluate the laws of nature which can then be used to create products which save human time and efforts. Thomas Edison is known for his inventions like bulb. Discoveries of science only provided the rules like what would happen when passing the current into metal foil. Thomas Edison with repeated failures created a bulb which last for longer time period because foil used in that buld takes a significant time before burning out. So science discoveries help to make prouducts that guarantee easyness in human life.

The primarily focus of science is to gain knoledge through observation and experiments. Its interest is in finding the underlying reasons like why apple falls on ground. Why apple and paper have different falling time from the same height. Through a lot for experiments with significnt amount of samples, science provide theroy supported by the evidences. Business minds later use these discoveries to build products for human ease. For instance, sicence proved the role of frequency and how it helps to travel message in air but science did not build the smartphones or telephones.

ln conclusion, science is not responsible for ensuring improved lifestyle but they serve as the backbone for providing such solutions that actaully help in providing better life to individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: science’s primary role is to discover how the world works, while people and businesses apply those discoveries to improve life. The Edison example and the contrast between scientific work on frequencies and the creation of phones support this view, so the response addresses the question and gives relevant reasons. However, the opening briefly accepts that science makes life easier without clearly distinguishing this benefit from its main aim, and the discussion of Edison’s bulb focuses on technical detail rather than fully explaining the distinction between discovery and invention. To strengthen the argument, state your degree of agreement explicitly and develop each example more directly around why improving lives is or is not science’s most important aim.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs generally progress from the practical benefits of scientific advances to the idea that science investigates principles, and examples help illustrate the argument. Linking phrases such as “For instance” and “In conclusion” make the relationships between points visible. At times, however, the progression is less smooth: the first paragraph moves from machines to the main aim of science without clearly signalling the contrast, and the Edison explanation contains several steps that are difficult to follow. The repeated use of “which” also makes some references unclear. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s central claim to make the argument flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt relevant topic vocabulary, including “underlying truth,” “laws of nature,” “observation and experiments,” and “frequency,” which helps communicate the distinction between scientific discovery and practical invention. There is also some effort to use more formal phrasing, such as “the backbone” for science’s role. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and sometimes distract the reader: “primarily purpose,” “easyness,” “knoledge,” “significnt,” and “science provide theroy” are examples. Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “bulb which last for longer time period.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and word forms, and learn common academic collocations—for example, “conduct experiments,” “scientific discoveries,” and “improve quality of life”—rather than relying on repeated forms of “easy.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “which,” and “because.” This allows you to explain cause and effect and to compare scientific discovery with later applications. Some sentences are nevertheless faulty, and these errors occasionally make relationships harder to follow. For example, “the main aim of science is discover” needs an infinitive marker, while “science provide” and “bulb which last” show subject–verb agreement problems. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “created a bulb which last for longer time period” requires more accurate article and noun phrasing, and the questions about apples are fragments in this context. Practise checking agreement, verb patterns and complete sentence structure, while retaining your attempts at complex clauses.
