IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most important job of science should be to conduct experiments that can be proved beneficial and improve the lives of humans. To some extent I agree with this statement because science can play an important role in medical field by finding cure to various diseases. It can also help in improving the quality of life.
On the one hand, people argue that the important aim of science should be to develop the way people live. This is because nowadays individuals are living very difficult life due to few reasons. The first one is related to their health, in these days people often suffer from various diseases which are unidentified. The other reason is that the environment is becoming too much polluted which have negative impact on both humans and animals. Pollution is changing the climate of the earth. The planet is slowly becoming warmer day by day and is affecting the way people work.
On the other hand, I believe that scientist should pay attention to improve the people's livelihood. They can improve it by conducting experiments on diseases which are common and don't have any cure. This will enable scientist to find a possible solution for the virus which can be proved beneficial in improving individuals life. It can also help the government in finding a solution for the environmental pollution. Which will improve the air quality and increase oxygen quantity in the air. Which will elevate the health of people and will eliminate many viruses.
In conclusion, the scientist first priority should to make the peoples lives better and conduct experiments for the well-being of humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You take a relevant position, saying you agree “to some extent,” and discuss health and environmental problems as reasons science should improve people’s lives. The examples of research into diseases and pollution are connected to the prompt. However, the extent of your agreement is not fully explained: the essay does not clarify what other aims science might have or why improving lives should be its most important aim rather than one important aim among several. Several points, such as climate change affecting “the way people work,” are introduced but not developed with a specific explanation or example. To strengthen the response, state your position more precisely and extend each main reason with a clear example and explanation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the broad structure. However, the progression between ideas is not always clear. The first body paragraph presents reasons people’s lives are difficult, while the second repeats the claim that science should improve livelihoods, rather than developing a distinct counterpoint and response. The sequence “Which will improve…” and “Which will elevate…” creates sentence fragments and weakens the links between ideas. Some linking phrases also feel mechanical. Organise each paragraph around one clear point, explain how it supports your position, and connect sentences with clear references rather than repeated transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “diseases,” “environmental pollution,” “climate,” and “air quality,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There is some attempt to use more formal language, such as “beneficial” and “well-being.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated references to “improve” and “people’s lives.” Some collocations are unnatural, for example “finding cure to various diseases” and “increase oxygen quantity in the air,” which make the expression less fluent. Aim for more precise topic language and check how words combine naturally. For instance, use “develop treatments for diseases” and “improve air quality” rather than less idiomatic combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “because” and “which,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, errors occur often enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “people are living very difficult life,” “which have negative impact,” and “the scientist first priority should to make,” where articles, agreement, possessives or verb forms are missing or incorrect. The standalone sentences “Which will improve…” and “Which will elevate…” are fragments because they depend on the preceding idea. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles and complete sentence structure. Combining related ideas into fewer, correctly punctuated sentences would also improve control.
