IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The main purpose of science should be to improve people’s lives. I largely agree with this statement because science was introduced to people to make their life more easier. This essay will illustrate the reasons of why science is here with us to make our life better.
When people talk about science, the first thing that comes to their mind is technology. Nowadays, technology has evolved in many ways. Therefore, technology has made our life easier. Science is contributing in heathcare, agriculture, transportation, communication and many other domains. Different types of theory are being implemented to these domain so that people can improve their life. For example, there are new equipments being introduced in medical sector. People can detect their deseases and follow the remedies that science has provided for the disease. Other than that, many robots are now used to help human beings so that human do not have to participate in any risky physical work. Science has been contribtuing in every step to make our life easier.
However, science might be used to backfire in our lives too. Some people use science to implement their evil thoughts. For instance, many people create bombs and guns with the help of science. This harms people's lives. Wars, fights, bombings are now more critical. Different type of harmful chemicals are made. In world war, one of the city in Japan known as Hiroshima Nagasaki, was bombed by USA. Years passed by but the effect of that bomb is still there.
In conclusion, Science can be used for both purposes. In my opinion, science should be focused to improve people's lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address the question and state a clear position: “I largely agree,” then reaffirm that science “should be focused to improve people's lives.” The body gives relevant support through healthcare, agriculture, transport and communication, and contrasts these benefits with weapons and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing. This range of examples meets the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than explained: the medical example says people can detect diseases and follow remedies, but does not show in detail how this improves lives; the harmful-use paragraph could explain the lasting human or environmental consequences more fully. The introduction also promises to explain why science is “here with us,” which is less precise than directly framing the reasons for your position. Develop the examples and connect them explicitly to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a contrasting paragraph on harmful uses, and a conclusion. The shift signalled by “However” is clear, and examples generally follow the claims they support. This gives the reader a straightforward line of development. Some cohesion is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “science” and “make our life easier,” and the opening sentences of the first body paragraph repeat the idea that technology has evolved and made life easier without adding much progression. References such as “these domain” and “that bomb” are not always precise. To strengthen the flow, organise each paragraph around one main claim, use clearer references, and make the link between each example and your position explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “healthcare,” “agriculture,” “transportation,” “robots,” “risky physical work,” and “harmful chemicals.” However, the range is limited by repeated general wording such as “life easier,” “science,” and “people,” and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “contributing in healthcare,” “different types of theory,” “equipments,” “deseases,” and “backfire in our lives.” Some expressions are also vague, such as “follow the remedies that science has provided.” Aim for more accurate topic collocations and vary repeated phrases; for instance, describe specific medical advances or say that science “supports diagnosis and treatment.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “because” clauses, a relative clause (“so that people can improve their life”), and a contrast introduced by “However.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “make their life more easier” has an incorrect comparative construction, and “Different types of theory are being implemented to these domain” has problems with number and sentence structure. There are also errors in agreement and articles in “human do not have to participate” and “one of the city.” Punctuation around the Hiroshima and Nagasaki example also makes the sentence difficult to follow. Practise accurate plural forms, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
