IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Science should prioritize working for the betterment of individual's lives because life is only a one time opportunity and a healthy life leads to success. This essay agrees to the above statement.

Life is a gift of God which we experience only once. Hence, science should work on examining how the system works inside our bodies and introduce products which help in preventing life threatening diseases. Instead of exploring space which does not benefit us, science should work to save our lives. For instance, if scientists allocate the NASA budget to studies on curing cancer, it would be beneficial for everyone's lives in the long term.

Moreover, if science works on transforming junk food to healthy food without changing the taste then it can lead to a better future for people. If people have enough nutrients, they would have enough energy to work and their mind would generate new ideas. This can lead to promotions and greater job opportunities as well. For example, if science invents healthy food nutrients into junk food then all the youngsters would definitely eat it. This way they'll become fit and would work well with a fresh mind leading to a successful career. Ultimately, they can become scientists and help carry on further studies to help improve the lives. However, science should also focus on other areas such as under water exploration but people's lives matter the most.

In conclusion, I agree to the fact that science should mainly concentrate on improving the lives of individuals since it could lead to a successful career and improved health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you agree that science should mainly improve people’s lives. The health examples—research into cancer and making nutritious food more appealing—are relevant, and you also acknowledge other fields such as underwater exploration. This addresses the task, but the support is uneven. The claim that space exploration “does not benefit us” is too absolute and is not examined, while the link between healthier food, promotions and career success is asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response, develop the reasons more carefully and recognise that areas such as space research can also produce benefits for people’s lives.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with distinct examples, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing words such as “Hence,” “Moreover,” “For instance” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The progression is generally logical, but some connections feel mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the chain from nutrients to energy, promotions, and becoming a scientist moves through several claims without enough explanation. The final sentence about underwater exploration also interrupts the paragraph’s focus on food and careers. Group related points more tightly and use explicit reasoning to show how each example supports your central position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “life-threatening diseases,” “nutrients,” “cancer” and “underwater exploration,” so the main ideas are clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “allocate the NASA budget” and “transforming junk food to healthy food.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “life is only a one time opportunity,” “work on examining how the system works,” and “invent healthy food nutrients into junk food.” Repetition of “lives,” “science” and “help” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms; for example, describe research as “investigating bodily processes” or “developing healthier alternatives.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if science works on transforming junk food…” and a subordinate clause beginning “since it could lead…”. Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “individual’s lives” should be plural possessive (“individuals’ lives”), and “a one time opportunity” needs a hyphen in the compound modifier (“one-time opportunity”). In “if science invents healthy food nutrients into junk food,” the sentence structure does not clearly express the intended action. Review possessives, compound modifiers and sentence construction, and check that conditional clauses connect clearly to their main clauses.
