IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many believe that the most significant role for science is to to increase the quality of life of citizens. I agree with this statement because Science is one of the most important fields in our society, it's the reason for the survival of the human race since the begining of time.
One of the most important fields of science is medicine, which it should aim to cure deadly diseases. Historically, plagues and infectious diseases have killed millions of people, even a a fever was deadly cause there was no enough knowledge to control it, without the medical research the human population would've been much smaller today. Thanks to researchers and doctors today we have vaccines and treatements to protect people from fatal illneses. For exemple, a surgeaon cuts open the body, cure the damaged organ and close it again which saves lives everyday. Therefore goverments need to invest in the medical research.
Another important scientific field is engineering which helps our society through inventions. With transportation like cares, trains and planes engineering made traveling mush faster and safer, so people can reach their jobs, homes or hospitals much easier. Not only that but engineering helped us to be more connected through the internet and mobile phones which made it possible for people to work from home.
Although other fields like space exploration might feed our curiosity, but it won't directly improve people's lives. Other fields like entertainment serve the same purpose but its benifits should serve people.
Inconclusion i strongly believe that science should mainly aim to improve people's lives, like medical research that saves humans and engineering making life easier, these fields deserve more attention from goverments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you agree that science should primarily improve people’s lives. The medical and engineering examples are relevant, and the discussion of vaccines, surgery, transport and communication gives the argument a sound basis. You also acknowledge other purposes, such as space exploration, so the response engages with the question’s scope. However, the medical paragraph is more fully supported than the engineering paragraph, and the point about entertainment is brief and unclear (“its benefits should serve people”). To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how each example improves lives and develop the qualification about science’s other aims rather than dismissing them quickly. The main ideas are relevant, but not all are extended equally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on medicine and engineering, a qualification, and a conclusion. This makes the line of argument easy to follow, and transitions such as “Another important scientific field” help signal a change of focus. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although other fields like space exploration might feed our curiosity, but…” combines two contrasting structures, while “Not only that” links ideas less precisely than a clear explanation of the relationship would. The final paragraph also compresses several points into one sentence. Use more varied, accurate linking and make each paragraph’s central point explicit, with supporting explanation following it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “infectious diseases,” “medical research,” “vaccines,” “engineering,” and “transportation,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “fatal illnesses” and “space exploration.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes distract the reader: examples include “treatements,” “illneses,” “surgeaon,” “cares,” and “benifits.” Some collocations are also awkward, such as “the most significant role for science” and “serve people.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common academic word partnerships. More precise alternatives for repeated general terms such as “important” and “helped” would also make the argument more flexible and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including relative clauses (“which helps our society through inventions”) and cause-and-effect structures (“so people can reach their jobs…”). The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “which it should aim” has an unnecessary subject, and “Although …, but …” uses incompatible linking structures. The opening also contains a repeated infinitive in “to to increase,” while several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, as in the surgery example and the sentence beginning “Not only that.” Work on clause construction, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, and proofread for agreement and article use. Greater accuracy in these areas would make your varied sentence attempts clearer and more controlled.
