IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Science is like water as it is involved in everything either directly or indirectly, no work can be completed if it is not done by the process stated by science. From a sappling to becoming a tree science is involved .

Overall science is something which can be used for both destruction & creation, the main important thing is the mind which is using it if the mind is using for destruction it will have a bad impact on the lives of people and if it is for creation then it will help the mankind .

I agree with this statement as science is very important nowadays as it is used in every small thing . Science has it's own branches like science & technology, science & food etc . Science is used for creating websites for small shop owners, it is also used for making robots and machines which are found in shopping malls and restraunts .

In my family, Rahul was a robotics student and his father was having a showroom of clothes but the problem was that they were on break even point and were not able to hire any labour for their showroom, as a result rahul made a working prototype of a helper for the showroom and it solved the problem. This also helped them in reducing workload of his father as the robot maintained all the accounts up to date without any mistake.

This is a modern world which requires modern technology with every need and in future we will see more robots and machines than humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You state a relevant position—“I agree with this statement”—and the robotics example gives a concrete illustration of science improving a family’s business and reducing workload. However, the response only partially develops the question of what science’s most important aim should be. The opening comparison with water and the contrast between creation and destruction introduce broad ideas, but you do not explain why improving lives should take priority over other possible aims, such as expanding knowledge or addressing environmental problems. The showroom example is useful, yet it supports a narrow practical benefit rather than a fully reasoned argument. Develop your position with a second distinct reason and explain how each example demonstrates the central claim.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it moves from a general introduction to your position, then gives a personal example and a concluding prediction. The paragraph about Rahul’s robot is the clearest section because it follows the problem, solution and result. However, the overall progression is not consistently clear. The opening paragraph’s claims about science being involved in everything are not connected explicitly to the later argument, and the final sentence about future robots does not fully summarise your reasoning. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “as a result” are used, but relationships between ideas are sometimes abrupt or repetitive. Use a clearer sequence of claim, explanation and example, and make the conclusion directly reinforce your answer to the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “destruction,” “creation,” “prototype,” “workload” and “maintained all the accounts,” which helps communicate the example. However, the range is limited and several general words recur, especially “science,” “used,” “thing” and “help.” Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the main important thing,” “on break even point” and “science & food”; spelling errors such as “sappling” and “restraunts” also reduce accuracy. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they make the argument less precise. Aim for more specific terms for scientific aims and benefits, and check spelling and common word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the account of the robot’s effect is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences often contain errors in punctuation, agreement, articles or sentence boundaries. For example, “no work can be completed if it is not done by the process stated by science” is awkwardly constructed, while “the main important thing is the mind which is using it” has unclear clause structure. In “if the mind is using for destruction,” the verb pattern is incomplete; “if it is for creation then it will help” also needs clearer punctuation. There are frequent issues with apostrophes and sentence spacing. Practise building accurate sentences with subordinate clauses, and proofread each sentence for complete structure and punctuation.
