IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science itself is such a broad and wide topic, it can have many different perspectives and goals. Some people wants to understand the universe through science, some wants to gain economic benefit while others want to use it for benefitting mankind. I believe the goal of science and research should be improving and easing human lives.
From the beginning of mankind, they wanted solutions for their daily lives. The introduction of science happened when humankind invented fire. Then they invented tires which was meant for easing transportation. Every early interventions was done to improve our anchestor's daily lives.
After finding solutions to daily problems, humans started to seeking answers from the universe. Then they invented mathematics, geology, astronomy etc. They began to understand the universe better and also started adventuring. They adventured the whole world and then conquered moon. However, while doing all these things, the core concept remained always same - 'How it will benefit humankind?'
In today's age, we have bullet trains, aeroplanes for easier transportation, hybrid plants which can grow in every season, advanced healthcare for difficult diseases all of which are results of science and dedicated to the help of mankind. However, we have also developed bombs, missiles, biological weapons which can be very destructive in the wrong hands. While maybe the intentions of the scientists were not wrong, still they are threats to the mankind. We have seen what these can do in countless wars specially in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in world war II.
Many scientists are still working on how to make everything better for us, while some are working to create something more destructive. We are the only species that can think rationally and innovate something. We have come a long way from the days of inventing fire. I think our thinking and innovating ability should mainly focus on how to make life better for everyone. For instance, how to cure deadly diseases such as cancer and AIDS, how to grow enough food for everyone on the planet, making clean water available for everyone. Finally, I will conclude with that while innovations and quenching curiosity are goals of scienve, the main focus should always be improving people's lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: science should primarily improve and ease human lives, while curiosity and innovation also matter. You address the question directly and support your view with relevant examples, including healthcare, food production, clean water, transport, and the destructive potential of weapons. The historical discussion also helps explain your reasoning. This fits a response that addresses the task and extends its ideas, although some claims are broad rather than fully demonstrated—for example, that the core purpose of exploration has always been to benefit humankind. To strengthen the argument further, qualify such generalisations and explain more precisely how scientific curiosity can be valuable even when immediate practical benefits are not apparent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall progression: it introduces your position, traces science from early inventions to exploration, contrasts beneficial and harmful applications, and ends by restating your view with practical priorities. Paragraphing supports this structure, and transitions such as “After finding solutions,” “However,” and “Finally” help readers follow the argument. This is coherent overall, with some effective progression, but cohesion is not always smooth or precise. For instance, “Then they invented…” is repeated across the historical paragraphs, and “while doing all these things” refers broadly to several preceding activities. Varying transitions and using clearer references would make links between ideas more flexible and less repetitive, while preserving the strong paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “economic benefit,” “advanced healthcare,” “biological weapons,” and “quenching curiosity,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “things,” “better,” and “benefit,” and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “wide topic,” “for benefitting mankind,” “adventuring the whole world,” and “anchestor's.” Some expressions also sound unnatural, such as “conquered moon” and “threats to the mankind.” Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this will help you express your ideas more naturally without changing their meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast with “while” and examples introduced by “For instance.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “Some people wants” should use a plural verb, and “Every early interventions was” has a mismatch between the determiner, noun, and verb. “Humans started to seeking” also combines incompatible verb forms, while “the core concept remained always same” has an awkward article and word order. Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive and gerund patterns, and article use. Building accurate complex sentences before adding further complexity will make your argument easier to read.
