IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The primary role of science should be to enhance individual's lifestyle. I completely agree with this view as the underlying reasons behind the invention of science was to optimize people's lives in every aspect of life and to connect with each other irrespective of geographical location.
The innovation of science has made our life easier in every possible way. In the past, people would rub two rocks against each other just to light a fire to move through dark places. The invention of electric light, for example, has made our life way more easier than we have ever imagined. In addition, we now have modern facilities integrated with artifical intelegence to facilitate life and aid people in learning and accquiring knowledge to enrich one's interest. As a result, people are becoming interested in research and technology fostering holistic development of a society.
Furthermore, we now can communicate with the world through the invention of technology via internet, which has helped as to exchange culture, food, language, tradition with each other, and broaden the horizon of our knowledge. For intance, valentine's day is now celebrated all over the world, reducing the distance and increasing love and respect between the world. Not only that, it has helped people who live abroad to build stronger relationship with their family members, even though they do not live in the same place.
In conclusion, I believe the first and foremost duty of science is to provide multiple opportunities by improving the people's lives through worldwide connection and advanced amenities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction—“I completely agree”—and the essay stays focused on how science can improve daily life. You support this with relevant examples, including electric lighting, AI-assisted learning and communication with family across borders. The discussion also shows some awareness of broader benefits, such as cultural exchange. However, the reasons are not developed equally: the fire-and-light example is explained, while the claim that Valentine’s Day reduces distance and increases respect is asserted rather than demonstrated. The essay therefore addresses the task and gives relevant support, but some ideas remain general or under-explained. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how each example improves people’s lives and consider a further dimension, such as health or safety.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present distinct benefits, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from practical improvements in daily life to global communication is logical. Linking phrases such as “In addition,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader, and examples are generally placed alongside the points they support. At times, however, the connections between claims are a little loose: the move from AI-assisted learning to society’s “holistic development” is not fully explained, and the Valentine’s Day example does not clearly establish the claimed effect on respect. Use more precise links between each example and its main point, rather than relying mainly on paragraph-opening transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “innovation,” “facilities,” “exchange culture,” and “advanced amenities,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the primary role” and “broaden the horizon of our knowledge.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “enhance individual's lifestyle,” “way more easier,” and “build stronger relationship.” Spelling errors such as “artifical,” “intelegence,” “accquiring,” and “intance” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “improve people’s quality of life” and “build stronger relationships.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “people who live abroad” and a concessive clause beginning “even though.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains easy to follow. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the opening, “the underlying reasons … was” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “the invention of science” does not fit the intended meaning. Other examples include “has helped as to exchange,” “people’s lives” used with an unnecessary article in the conclusion, and missing or inconsistent plural forms in “stronger relationship.” Review agreement, articles, and plural nouns, and proofread sentence patterns. Greater accuracy across these structures would make your varied sentences more controlled.
