Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You take a position in favour of science improving people’s lives, and you give relevant examples involving cancer diagnosis, treatment research and mobile phones. These examples show an understanding of the topic, but the response addresses the question only partially: the benefits are asserted more than explained, and the opposing view that technology can create hazards is mentioned but not discussed. The position is also not fully developed beyond the general claim that science has helped people and will continue to do so. The response is 181 words, below the required 250, so there is not enough space to develop the reasons and examples. To strengthen your answer, explain how each example improves people’s lives and clarify whether this is science’s most important aim compared with other aims, such as expanding knowledge.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic overall structure: an opening paragraph states your view, followed by a paragraph giving examples. The ideas are generally relevant, and phrases such as “for instance” and “for example” help signal illustrations. However, the response ends without a concluding paragraph, and the progression within the body is difficult to follow: the discussion moves from cancer diagnosis to antibiotics and then to mobile phones without clearly linking these points. Some connections are also unclear, particularly “In an other” and “In that case.” Use separate, focused paragraphs for each main reason, connect each example explicitly to the claim, and add a conclusion that restates your position. This would make the organisation more complete and cohesion less dependent on a few basic linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “scientific advancement,” “diagnosis,” “research” and “online banking,” and these choices help communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and many spelling, word-form and collocation errors make parts of the response difficult to understand. Examples include “takeen charge,” “consiquenses,” “effectve treatment” and “collbrate.” Phrases such as “ease for almost every profession” and “betterness” are also unnatural or imprecise. Aim to use accurate, natural combinations rather than forcing more advanced wording: for example, describe science as “improving quality of life” or research as “identifying effective treatments.” Proofreading spelling and checking common collocations would make your meaning clearer and help you express the examples more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “Although” and a reason introduced by “for instance.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction frequently make the reader work to understand the meaning. For example, “some people says” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “science has takeen charge” uses an incorrect verb form. The opening “Although” clause is not completed with a clear main clause, and the final sentence joins several ideas without a clear grammatical structure. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea, then add subordinate clauses only when you can control them. Check tense, agreement and sentence boundaries carefully during revision.
