Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most essential goal of science should be to improve people's lives. To my knowledge i totally agree with this statement.

Firstly, science they say is a blessing to humanity. It is a very important part of people's day to day activities, for example the first thing most people get woken up by is their personal alarm clock which is a product of science. Most jobs in this era are available because of technology, you can hear someone say that they are a computer engineer, and they work through their laptops from home. This job is a product of technology which increases the rate of employment and creates an avenue for income.

Secondly, in schools science plays a major role in helping children to learn further. Most advanced schools in this 21st century, have switched to computerized boards for each classroom, with atleast one device to help the kids learn, like a class laptop. This idea helps teach the kids much more than what they read in their textbooks, which is also helpful but when further research is needed they will need the internet to help learn more, because gradually textbooks are becoming outdated as time goes on.

Some people may argue, saying technology is rotting the minds of the young generation. But are forefathers did they do all that research and work to bring up the first models of these devices we are using today to harm the future, or as they say rot the minds of our children? I dont think so, they brought up these ideas because they wanted to improve the coming generation lives and they knew it will be needed in the future for basic ideas, like for entertainment we have the television, mobile phones, tablets etc. The world is becoming more advanced to our advantage, making daily activities easier and less stressful for humans.

In conclusion, i totally agree that the most essential goal of science should be to improve people's lives. By increasing the employment rate, and helping teach the younger generation much more than the textbooks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening and conclusion: you agree that science should improve people’s lives. You support this with relevant examples involving employment, education and everyday convenience, and you briefly acknowledge the opposing view that technology may harm young people. This covers the task and gives the response a sound basis. However, some points are asserted more than explained: for instance, the alarm-clock example shows science’s presence in daily life, but its wider effect on people’s lives is not explored, and the education paragraph could explain more specifically how technology improves learning. To strengthen the response, develop fewer examples in greater depth and connect each one directly to the central claim. The counterargument would also benefit from a more balanced response rather than a rhetorical question alone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, a paragraph acknowledging an opposing view, and a conclusion. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the main ideas are generally grouped appropriately. This provides coherent organisation, although some linking is mechanical and connections within paragraphs are not always smooth. For example, the move from computer-based jobs to employment and income is understandable but could be explained more explicitly; similarly, the education paragraph shifts from classroom boards to textbooks and internet research without a clear transition. Use a wider range of natural links and clearer references between sentences, and ensure the conclusion summarises the argument rather than simply repeating the opening position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “technology,” “computerized boards,” “employment,” and “internet.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “a blessing to humanity” and “rotting the minds,” which show some awareness of tone. However, the range is limited by repetition of general words such as “help,” “ideas,” and “people,” and some phrases are imprecise or unnatural. For example, “the rate of employment” would be more naturally expressed as “employment opportunities,” while “improve the coming generation lives” needs a more accurate phrase such as “improve the lives of future generations.” Aim for precise collocations and avoid informal or dramatic wording when a neutral academic expression would make your point clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including explanations with “because” and a contrast introduced by “Some people may argue.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “The most essential goal … lives. To my knowledge i” needs a space and sentence boundary, while “But are forefathers” should be “But our forefathers.” The sentence beginning “Most advanced schools in this 21st century” also has awkward punctuation and article use, and “they knew it will be needed” shifts tense inconsistently. Practise checking sentence boundaries, capitalisation and agreement, and revise longer sentences so that each clause is grammatically complete. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts clearer.
