The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science stands as one of the crucial factor that enhanced the evolution for human species, from invention of fire by rubbing stones to visiting moon. Scientific discoveries fundamentally existed to ease up human life by reducing efforts, saving time, resources and labour. Science also plays an important role to find out hidden answers of universe.
I agree to the statement that improving people's lives should be main aim of science, not only because it simplifies task of human to make their life easier but also because it helps the needful to survive better in this modern world. "Survival of the fittest" was the ultimate truth discovered by charles darwin, the father of evolution, which is not relevant now as science ease up everyone's life, making survival feasible for every human being. By focusing on people's lives, science have developed upto a great extent in medical world. With advancement in diagnosis and treatment , people can live much longer without any pain. Moreover with advancements in technologies like mobile phones, air condtioners, heaters, and likewise, people's daily life problems have been resolved. One can travel and visit any corner of the world now and can even communicate from any part of the globe to completly opposite part within seconds with help of science . Considering such life changing inventions, i sincerly believe that improving people's lives should be the most important aim.
Although it should also be kept in mind that just focusing on humans should be the case, apart from people , scienctific exploration of animals, birds, reptiles should not be discarded. Moreover areas like enviromental science, geology, botany, veternary should also be prioritized as we share the same habitat for survival.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree that improving people’s lives should be science’s main aim, and you support it with examples from medicine, household technology, travel and communication. This gives the response relevant coverage of the question and shows the beginnings of a developed argument. The explanation of medical advances and longer, less painful lives is particularly pertinent. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the reference to Darwin and “survival of the fittest” does not clearly establish why science should prioritise human welfare. The final paragraph introduces animal and environmental research, but its relationship to your main position could be made more explicit. To strengthen the response, explain how these fields also improve human lives or qualify your position more precisely; this would extend the ideas more consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining your agreement, and a final qualification about research beyond humans. Ideas generally progress from broad claims to examples, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Although” help signal relationships. However, the final paragraph is very brief and its opening, “Although it should also be kept in mind,” does not connect smoothly to a complete contrasting point. Some transitions are mechanical, and the first paragraph’s point about uncovering the universe is not clearly carried into the argument. Develop the qualification in a fuller paragraph and use clearer references to connect each example to your central claim. This would make the progression more consistent and cohesion less dependent on repeated linking words.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “scientific discoveries,” “diagnosis and treatment,” “advancement in technologies” and “environmental science.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common expressions show an effort to discuss the topic beyond basic terms. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or awkward, as in “ease up human life,” “hidden answers of universe” and “the needful.” Spelling errors such as “condtioners,” “completly” and “sincerly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, use “make life easier,” “unanswered questions about the universe” and “people in need.” This would improve precision while retaining your relevant range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “Although” and a longer sentence that links medical advances to their effects. The main ideas remain understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “one of the crucial factor” needs a plural noun, while “science have developed” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. In “Although it should also be kept in mind that just focusing on humans should be the case,” the clause structure is difficult to follow. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, particularly around sentence endings and “I.” Review agreement and article use, and simplify or restructure sentences when the relationship between clauses is unclear.
