Student answer (Band 5.5)

Whether the primary purpose of science should be devoted to life improvement or not, have sparked a hot debate. I believe the ambition of science and its developments must be help oriented.

The most highlighting impact of science is in living standards including everyday needs i.e., preserving lives and health outcomes. People rely abundantly in medical grounds as well as in daily life essentials. For instance, science have upgraded human lifestyle and the ability to protect themselves. There were the diseases which people used to think of life taking and daily life problems like cancer, diabetes, sightedness issues, etc. These are being eradicated by development of in chemotherapy, insulin and different lenses to see through. With the help of science, countries are able to defend their systems and database.

There are multiple advancements in agriculture, like insecticides and pesticides, that makes the food safe and provide plentiful of it to nations. Moreover, the technology has made the lives easier than ever, for example mobile phones and internet have accelerated the communication, the bullet trains and busses save time, electronic items has reduced the manual intervention, and above all it has uplifted the socio-economic problems by making trade easier and convenient.

In conclusion, I would say the first most duty of science must be development of one’s life. The people who disagree with this stance overlooks the material advancements in their lifestyle, medication, agriculture and economic areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that science should primarily improve people’s lives, and you support it with relevant examples from medicine, agriculture, transport and communication. However, several points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that science helps countries “defend their systems and database” is not connected clearly to improving people’s lives, and the examples of cancer and other conditions being “eradicated” overstate what the treatments achieve. The response also does not explore any limits or competing aims of science, so the discussion is only partly developed. Finally, the response is 14 words below the required minimum. Develop the examples more precisely and explain why they support your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give examples, and a conclusion restates your position. The ideas are generally grouped by topic, moving from health to agriculture and technology. Some connections, however, are abrupt. The sentence about defending “systems and database” interrupts the discussion of medical benefits, while the second body paragraph lists several technologies without showing how each contributes to the central argument. Linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal progression, but the essay would be clearer if each paragraph had a more focused main idea and examples were connected with explicit explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “living standards,” “chemotherapy,” “insecticides,” “socio-economic” and “communication.” This gives you enough language to discuss several relevant areas. However, a number of word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning unclear: “help oriented,” “rely abundantly in medical grounds,” “sightedness issues,” and “development of in chemotherapy” are examples. Some expressions are also too broad or imprecise, such as “electronic items” and “material advancements.” Aim for natural collocations and precise terms, and check that each word fits the intended meaning. This would make your argument easier to follow and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including examples introduced by “For instance” and a concluding sentence with a relative clause. However, errors occur frequently and sometimes make sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “Whether the primary purpose … or not, have sparked” lacks a clear grammatical subject and has incorrect agreement; “science have upgraded” also has subject–verb disagreement. Other problems include “that makes” after the plural “advancements,” “electronic items has,” and the construction “development of in chemotherapy.” Review subject–verb agreement, sentence completeness, articles and prepositions. Building accurate shorter sentences first, then adding complex structures, will improve clarity and control.
