IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that the main purpose of science is to have a positive impact in people's lives. I strongly agree with this view as science has facilitated humans with numerous inventions and has helped them to lead an easy life.
One of the main reason I support this view is because science has given opportunities to scientist to explore and perform new experiments. From the exploration of fire to the invention of light bulb by Thomas Eddison, it is now impossible to survive without science For example, the invention of a car engine has made humans to advance substantially in the last century as it was a crucial part of Industrial Evolution. This led to the advancements in trade and globalisation that has helped economies to grow and become superpowers.
Another important point is how science has progressively helped humans in daily life to achieve a healthy lifestyle and to fight diseases. Science in healthcare have had substantial growth with the introduction of AI. Artificial Intelligence, for example, is being used widely in hospitals and labs for early diagnosis of blood cancer that helps the doctors to treat the patient timely. As a result, advancement in technology has provided humans with ease and solutions to the problems they have been facing for generations. Moreover, it has also helped siabaled get prosthetics arms or legs.
In conclusion, I believe that science has not only provided humans with endless opportunites but has also given them a chance to broaden their horizons and to improve their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that science should improve people’s lives. The body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including the effects of engines on trade and globalisation, and the use of AI in diagnosing blood cancer. These examples show that you address the task and begin to support your view. However, the first paragraph moves from early discoveries to economic growth without fully explaining how these developments improve people’s lives, and the healthcare point would benefit from more detail about its practical impact. The reference to prosthetics is also introduced abruptly. To strengthen the response, explain each example more fully and connect it explicitly to your central argument about human wellbeing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “One of the main reason,” “Another important point,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the progression. The ideas within each paragraph are generally relevant, but some links are abrupt: the move from industrial development to superpowers, and the final mention of prosthetics, need clearer explanation. There is also a missing full stop after “science” and no space after “generations.” These interruptions make the flow less controlled. Use linking phrases to show cause and effect, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “globalisation,” “early diagnosis,” “substantial growth,” and “broaden their horizons,” which helps communicate your ideas about science and society. There are also attempts at less common or precise expressions, but several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce accuracy. For example, “facilitated humans with” is not a natural construction, “lead an easy life” is imprecise, and “Industrial Evolution” appears to be an inaccurate term. “Eddison” and “opportunites” are misspelled, while “siabaled” makes the prosthetics point difficult to understand. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; precise wording will make your examples clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “as” and a relative clause in “that has helped economies to grow.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main argument is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries remain noticeable. For example, “One of the main reason” should use a plural noun, “science in healthcare have” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “has made humans to advance” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “From the exploration of fire” also runs into the next clause without clear punctuation. Review these patterns and proofread sentence boundaries to improve control while retaining your complex structures.
