IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals believe that the most essential focus of science should be in people's lives, how research can be beneficial to human beings. I partially agree with the statement. By focusing on space exploration can increase the knowledge of human beings as well as scientist.

Science integrating with technology can improve quality of life. Scientist knows the body structure as well as vital elements needed for body to survive when life-threating disease, for instance Corona, can occur. Components like Zinc, Iron and Magnesium are important for our body and by applying them in day-to-day dishes can improve the human health at greater level. For example, Zomato, a start-up industry in India, company combines the knowledge of science with technology and recommend dishes for your body and even deliver to your door-step. The main objective of Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, is to improve people's health and lives.

Not all scientific research needs to produce immediate benefits for society. Scientist can also explore outer space for tremendous findings and research which can eventually helps our earth and people's well-being. In space, we can find elements or living micro-organism, which are not available on earth, which can protect us in future from any threat or disease. For instance, Astrophase was once a threat on earth which was releasing Carbon-dioxide in numerous amount. Astronauts found the solution by travelling to Mars, another planet, and found another living organism which can eliminate the Astrophase and saved the earth.

In conclusion, aim of science should not be on one goal, for human beings, but should also foucs on other things like space exploration which can give unexpected findings and can be helpful in upcoming time. Therefore, I partially agree that improving people's lives should be the primary aim of science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is stated as partial agreement and is repeated in the conclusion, while both human health and space exploration are relevantly discussed. The health paragraph gives a concrete example involving nutrition and a food-delivery company, and the space paragraph attempts to show how exploration might benefit people later. However, the argument is only partly convincing: the Zomato example does not clearly demonstrate scientific research improving lives, and the Astrophase story is difficult to understand and appears unsupported. The relationship between space research and the stated aim also needs clearer explanation. Develop each example with accurate, plausible details and explain more directly how it supports your position; this would make the response address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for health and space research, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the two main areas of discussion, and phrases such as “For example” and “In conclusion” signal the direction of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The move from nutrients to Zomato, for instance, does not explain the connection between scientific knowledge and the company’s service. In the space paragraph, the sequence from an alleged threat to travelling to Mars and finding a solution is hard to follow. Clarify the links between claims and examples, and use referencing that makes clear what “which” and “them” refer to. This would make cohesion less mechanical and more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “space exploration,” “vital elements,” “outer space,” and “well-being,” which allows you to discuss both health and scientific research. Some less common terms are attempted, but word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward: “focus of science should be in people’s lives,” “at greater level,” and “in numerous amount” do not sound natural. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “foucs” and “life-threating.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the broad argument, but they reduce precision and sometimes make examples harder to interpret. Prioritise accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in key claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “when life-threating disease … can occur” and a relative clause in “which can eventually helps our earth.” However, control is uneven, and several errors make sentences difficult to process. For example, “By focusing on space exploration can increase…” lacks a clear grammatical subject, while “which can eventually helps” has incorrect verb agreement and form. Other issues include missing articles in “for body to survive” and “aim of science,” and the sentence beginning “Scientist knows” shifts awkwardly between singular and plural reference. Work on complete clause structure, subject–verb agreement, and articles, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
