IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years, science has improved people's living standards such as advanced medical technology. I tend to agree with this statement because the basic purpose of science is to improve the lifestyle by aiding humans to withstand in every challenge.
Firstly, the reason for agreeing with it is that, in the past the methods were invented to ease people's life and making everything possible later on it was named as science. In the wars people misused science to make weapons and harmed others. If this will continue there are chances of humans of being extinct from earth and other living things also. In every field, like agriculture or industry science has developed new methodoly to strengthen their abilities. For example, in the past much manpower was needed to yield the crops while today science is doing all on its own. Futhurmore, it has empowered mankind with technologies like making the environment green with the help of solar energy and wind power. Moreover, science is not meant to make harmful chemicals and making the environment pollute like global warming.
In a nutshell, the principles of science should be to help mankind by making their lives more easy than in past. And people who are using science should know the actual purpose of science so that they can have positive benefits of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You state a relevant position in the introduction—“I tend to agree”—and return to the idea that science should help people in the conclusion. The examples of agricultural machinery and renewable energy support the general argument, while the discussion of weapons recognises that science can also be misused. However, the response only partly develops the question of whether improving lives should be science’s most important aim: the opening claim about living standards is not expanded, and the examples are asserted rather than explained in detail. The conclusion also repeats the main point without adding a clear qualification or fuller reasoning. The response is 221 words, so it does not meet the 250-word minimum. Develop each example and explain how it supports your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a main paragraph with supporting points, and a concluding paragraph. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “For example,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover” help signal the direction of the argument. However, most of the discussion is placed in one long body paragraph, so distinct ideas—warfare, agriculture, and renewable energy—are not clearly separated or developed in a logical progression. Some links are also difficult to follow, particularly the move from the risk of human extinction to agricultural methods. “Moreover” introduces a point that partly repeats the earlier contrast between beneficial and harmful science. Use separate paragraphs for key arguments and make the relationship between each example and your position explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “medical technology,” “weapons,” “agriculture,” “solar energy,” and “wind power,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the basic purpose of science” and “positive benefits.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are awkward, including “withstand in every challenge,” “yield the crops,” and “making the environment pollute.” Spelling errors such as “methodoly” and “Futhurmore” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, describe how technology “helps people overcome challenges” and how pollution “harms the environment.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, as in “If this will continue there are chances…” and “so that they can have positive benefits of it.” This shows an effort to express cause, condition, and purpose. However, the range is limited, and complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “in the past the methods were invented to ease people's life and making everything possible” mixes verb forms, while “If this will continue” uses an unsuitable tense after “if.” There are also problems with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “in the past much manpower was needed.” Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea and a clear supporting clause, then check verb forms and punctuation.
