IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I do agree that the aim of science is to improve people's live by eighty percent. science forms the basis of life and living. I agreee because scientists do research on different health conditions affecting the human beings and come up with solutions to solve the identified health problem. For example, during the Covid - 19 outbreak, scientists came up with a vaccine which helped people develop immunity against the covid strains thus the covid - 19 disease was not severe to the people who were vaccinated.
Scientists also have development several vaccines against childhood preventable diseases such as the measles and typhoid vaccines which helps in reduction of childhood diseases and deaths caused by preventable diseases.
scientists also conducts different researches on how people can live with different types of diseases for a long period.
For the scientists who deal with soil and environmental research, they advise people on the best type of crop which is suitable for each type of soil and the minerals in that particular soil thus helping in crop production and how to get more products.
Research by scientists also helps in understanding the human reproduction and genes . This help explain how some conjenital disorder develops and reduces the witchcraft myths in some African communities and prevent family break up due to misinformation.
Scientists have been able to explain how implantation in human beings and animals take place and explain how different set of twins occurs and how they thrive on their environment.
To conclude, scientists have be able to make the world a better place to live because human beings are able to predict the outcome of certain diseases and know how they are treated with different resarched drugs and non pharmaceutical approaches. people also got knowledge of what type of animals and their suitable living conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree that science should improve people’s lives, and you support this with relevant examples from medicine, agriculture, and genetics. The discussion of Covid vaccination and childhood vaccines gives the argument a concrete basis, while the soil research example broadens it beyond health. This covers the task well, but the response focuses almost entirely on benefits and does not explain whether improving lives is the most important aim compared with other possible aims, such as expanding knowledge. Some points, including the examples about twins and family break-up, are asserted rather than fully explained. To strengthen the response, clarify the extent of your agreement and develop fewer examples with more precise explanation of their impact.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The ideas are generally relevant and follow a broad progression from medical research to agriculture and genetics, with a concluding summary. However, the response is presented as one continuous block, so the shifts between these areas are not clearly signposted as stages in an argument. Several sentences begin with “Scientists also,” which makes the linking repetitive, and the conclusion introduces animals without a clear connection to the preceding discussion. Use separate paragraphs for the main areas, and make the relationship between examples explicit—for instance, explain how agricultural research improves people’s lives after describing soil and crop suitability. A clearer introduction, body structure, and conclusion would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “immunity,” “childhood preventable diseases,” “soil,” “minerals,” “genes,” and “implantation.” These terms help communicate ideas across several scientific fields. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “non pharmaceutical approaches,” although some combinations are inaccurate or awkward. Examples include “people’s live,” “get more products,” and “different set of twins occurs”; spelling errors such as “conjenital” and “resarched” also reduce precision. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more natural and precise. Choose terms that express the intended scientific outcome clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “which helped people develop immunity … thus the … disease was not severe.” This shows some range, and the main message is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement and verb forms recur: “scientists do research … and come up” shifts awkwardly in tense, “scientists also have development” uses an incorrect verb form, and “This help explain” lacks subject–verb agreement. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “different set of twins occurs” and the run-on conclusion. Review agreement and verb forms, and divide long sentences into controlled clauses. More consistent punctuation and capitalization would also improve accuracy.
