IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often claimed by many people that improving people's lives should be the most significant purpose of science. Although human being are so far the smartest creature found on earth, I partially disagree with this view because environment and other species should also get equal importance in science.

Firstly, rather than focusing mostly on the improvement of people's lives, scientists must spend similar attention how to tackle the environmental challenges. The primary reason is that we cannot sustain our lives neglecting the crisis on earth. For example, to enhance the lifestyle of human, software developers has been paying immense efforts to develop artificial intelligence which can makes people's lives easier. As a result a lot of water is being used in the system and nature is being harmed due to this.

Furthermore, I partially disagreed with the view because I reckon lives of other species are equally important. This is beacause we human cannot live alone in this earth. But if we pay the most attention in developing systenms to improve people's lives it destroy other habitats, To illustrate, we destroyn natural habitats of many animals for our betterment. therefore

In conclusion, many people advocate that the most important goal of science should be improving human life. I partially disagree with this statement as I beleive preserving nature and other animals should have the equal proportion of significance in the field of science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear, though qualified, position: you “partially disagree” because the environment and other species deserve importance too. Both body paragraphs relate to this view, using AI’s water use and habitat destruction as examples. However, the response only partially develops the task: the examples are brief, and the link between scientific priorities and the harms described needs clearer explanation. The second body paragraph ends abruptly with “therefore,” leaving its point unfinished, and the conclusion mainly repeats your position rather than drawing the reasoning together. The response also contains 234 words, below the required 250. Develop each example with a fuller explanation and complete the unfinished paragraph to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Firstly” and “Furthermore” signal the two main reasons, and the conclusion returns to your position. However, progression within the body paragraphs is uneven: the first moves from environmental challenges to AI and water use without fully explaining the connection, while the second stops at “therefore,” so the argument is incomplete. Some linking is mechanical, and the repeated “I partially disagree” in the introduction, second paragraph and conclusion limits variety. Improve cohesion by completing each paragraph’s reasoning, using clear references to connect examples to your claims, and avoiding abrupt or unfinished transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “environmental challenges,” “artificial intelligence,” “natural habitats” and “preserving nature,” which helps communicate your central concerns. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the most significant purpose of science.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, as in “spend similar attention,” “enhance the lifestyle of human” and “paying immense efforts.” Spelling errors such as “beacause,” “systenms,” “destroyn” and “beleive” are noticeable and reduce control. Build a more reliable range by learning common academic collocations and checking spelling; for example, use “devote equal attention to” and “improve people’s quality of life.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a reason clause beginning “because.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main position is generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction recur. Examples include “human being are,” “software developers has been paying,” and “which can makes”; these should be “human beings are,” “developers have been making efforts,” and “which can make.” The sentence beginning “But if we pay…” also has faulty agreement and punctuation, and the final “therefore” is left incomplete. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly punctuated structure.
