IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Science is making human life easier day by day in all the aspects of living. The motive of science should be to make a world better place for living healthy life. Being a part of healthcare system, I strongly believe that science have improved quality of life of people and will go more beyond in coming years.
In the past, there were neither trained and experienced physicians available nor advanced technology for diagnosis, treatments and surgeries. People were deprived of basic healthcare needs due to inavailability of doctors and machineries. But now techonology has got advancement and physicians are available around the globe with specialized training in their respective field, so as per World Health Organization (WHO) for 20 patients, 1 doctor should be available in a country and it is so in Cuba, where people are properly diagnosed and treated.
Whether, there are almost many other developing countries where this is not the case as in cuba but far much better than earlier centuries. Many vulnerable and incurable diseases can be treated now for instance many types of cancer, leprosy etc. Even a Cyberknife technology available with can kill the cancerous cells in brain about 2-3 inches in size in few sessions without extensive and expensive use of anaesthetic medications and staff.
Improvement in science for providing a healthier and quality living for individuals are still in progress, scientists working on nanotechnology for targeted anti-cancer therapy, so that these drugs will not impact normal healthy cells.
There are branches of healthcare which is being divided in more branches day by day to provide specialized care based on inidividual patient needs in more optimized way. Such as physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, psychologists, orthopedics, radiologists and many more enhancing patient quality of life, therapeutic efficacy with safety rather than relying on a general physician alone as in the previous centuries.
As per my perspective, the base of science in health was led by scientists thousands of years ago, still the progress is carrying on by our modern scientists making life more easy and making people more confident that they disease will now be treated in a much rational way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you strongly agree that science should improve people’s lives, and the healthcare focus is relevant throughout. You support this with examples such as cancer treatment, Cyberknife technology, and research into targeted therapies. However, the response addresses the broad question mainly through healthcare and does not explain whether improving lives should be science’s most important aim compared with other possible aims. Several claims are asserted rather than developed—for example, the WHO doctor-to-patient figure and Cuba example are not clearly connected to the central argument. To strengthen the response, explain why these examples demonstrate science’s priority, develop their effects on people, and briefly acknowledge another scientific aim before reaffirming your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an identifiable sequence: it introduces your view, contrasts past and present healthcare, and then discusses current and future developments. Paragraph breaks also help separate examples. However, progression is not consistently clear, and some links are awkward or inaccurate. The paragraph beginning “Whether, there are almost many other developing countries” is difficult to follow, while “But now” and “As per my perspective” provide basic transitions without showing the precise relationship between ideas. The final paragraph repeats the opening claim rather than drawing together the main reasons. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to your argument, and make references such as “these developments” unambiguous. A more purposeful conclusion would improve the overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “diagnosis,” “specialized training,” “nanotechnology,” and “targeted anti-cancer therapy,” which helps communicate your healthcare examples. There are also attempts at less common terms such as “therapeutic efficacy.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making meaning harder to follow: “inavailability of doctors and machineries,” “got advancement,” and “more optimized way” are examples. Spelling errors such as “techonology,” “inidividual,” and “cuba” also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. For instance, use “limited availability of doctors and medical equipment” and “has advanced” rather than translating phrases directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “where,” “so that,” and “rather than.” This gives the response some structural variety, but complex sentences are often faulty, and errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “science have improved,” “a world better place,” and “Improvement … are still in progress.” The sentence beginning “Even a Cyberknife technology available with can kill” is incomplete or malformed, and the final clause “that they disease will now be treated” is also difficult to parse. These errors sometimes interrupt understanding. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them with accurate subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement and article use during revision.
