IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most crucial goal of science should be to make lives easier. As, new researches are not completely linked to help humans. I agree with this statement because the modern technology is making lives advanced but more complicated. Nowadays, the advantages modernisation are less than the cons. In this essay, i will try to give reasons and examples according to this topic before reaching to the conclusion.
The new researches are not fully dedicated to humans, science is just moving to new trend by improving the last one. However, in this race the main goal of science is not achieved. For instance, the use of work from home or online learning was just to improve humans access but this also causes laziness and much more. Online learners are not physically active and their screentime causes eyesight problems. The main introduction of these technologies was helping people but the recent updates changes its impact completely
Science is not only linked to knowledge. The change in technology also impact the financial and mental life of people. It is difficult for human brain to instantly absorb the rapid change in society. For example, the main aim of Ai was just to help human to perform their tasks but the recent changes in Ai completely changed its goal, As, it is the reason of unemployment because humans are now addicted to perform tasks using Ai and the employers are willing to directly get the work done by Ai. Moreover, most of the people are getting lazy due to the use of modern tecchnology, they are not interested in process but only in the result.
In conclusion, the reason of main goal of science and the disadvantages of modern technology are discussed. However, these trends are disturbing humans instead of making lives easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You take a position that science should improve people’s lives, and the examples about online learning and AI are relevant to the question. However, the response only partially develops the argument: it focuses mainly on the harmful effects of technology, while the task asks how far you agree that improving lives should be science’s most important aim. The opening also says research is “not completely linked to help humans,” which makes your position less clear, and the conclusion repeats the concern about technology without resolving this tension. Explain more directly whether scientific progress should prioritise human wellbeing, and develop each example by showing how it supports that view. A clearer distinction between science’s aims and the unintended effects of particular technologies would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The examples are grouped into relevant themes, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “However” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. However, progression is not consistently clear: the introduction moves from agreeing with the statement to saying modernisation’s advantages are fewer than its disadvantages, and the body paragraphs do not clearly connect these claims to the central question. Some transitions are mechanical, while “the recent updates changes its impact completely” does not specify what “its” refers to. Build each paragraph around one clear point, use explicit links back to your position, and make references such as “these technologies” precise. This would make the overall argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “modern technology,” “online learning,” “screentime,” “unemployment” and “financial and mental life.” These terms allow you to discuss several consequences of scientific and technological change. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “goal,” “help” and “change,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, including “new researches,” “improving the last one” and “the advantages modernisation.” Spelling errors such as “tecchnology” and inconsistent capitalisation of “AI” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions, for example, “scientific research,” “build on previous innovations” and “the benefits of modernisation.” More accurate collocations would make your ideas clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “however” and “for example.” This gives you some variety, but complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. For instance, “As, new researches are not completely linked to help humans” is an incomplete and incorrectly punctuated construction; “the recent updates changes” has subject–verb disagreement; and “the main aim of AI was … but the recent changes … changed its goal” shifts awkwardly between tenses. There are also errors in articles and sentence boundaries, such as “the advantages modernisation” and the comma splice before “As” in the AI example. Practise complete clauses, agreement and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
