IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most crucial objective of science is to make lives of people better. I completely agree with statement. But I partily disagree to some extend.
To begin with the fundamental science has bring enormous changes and benefited humans in all aspects of life. One of the key advantage of science is that it provided us with medicines of almost every disease. The cure of even cancer is available to due to advancement in it. For instance the vaccine of Covid-19 was developed by scientist with a week in China.
Moreover, science and technology brings comfort and ease in our daily life by giving us the transport facility in every medium wether it is on land, water or air. The learning facility of students become more easier with science as they have direct on experiments to solidify their concepts. For example instruments are available in labs for students to learn their practical uses.
In my point of view science has given a ideal life to humans but there are some major concerns that we have to keep in mind. People needs to show responsibility as taking preventive measures such as self hygiene. In other words science has a lot of wonders but we need to careful in all aspects. For instance if a person is not washing its hands after using its the careless attitude which brings diseases in its body.
To sum up, science has made our lives easier from medicine to travel and it is everywhere for our benefit but we needs to a show responsible behaviour towards it by taking preventive measures to avoid serious issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is understandable: you support science’s role in improving life, while suggesting people must also act responsibly. You give relevant examples involving medicine, transport and education, so the response addresses the topic. However, the opening says “I completely agree” and then “partily disagree,” leaving your exact extent of agreement unclear. The discussion also shifts to personal hygiene and disease prevention without explaining how this qualifies your view about science’s main aim. Some claims, such as a cancer cure being available and the Covid vaccine being developed “with a week,” are inaccurate or insufficiently explained. State one consistent position and develop fewer examples with accurate, specific explanations of how they support it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “To sum up” help signal the stages of the argument, and the examples generally follow the points they illustrate. However, the progression is not always clear: the paragraph about hygiene moves away from the central question of science’s purpose, and the relationship between science and personal responsibility needs to be made explicit. Some linking is mechanical, while references such as “it” and “its” in the hygiene example make it difficult to identify who or what is meant. Organise each body paragraph around one clear reason, then use precise references and transitions to show how each example supports your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “fundamental science,” “advancement,” “transport facility,” and “preventive measures,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There is also an attempt to vary wording rather than rely entirely on basic terms. However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “ideal life,” “direct on experiments,” and “in every medium.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “partily,” “wether,” and “scientist” where a plural is needed, also reduce precision. Aim for natural combinations and check spelling and forms carefully. More precise terms such as “access to practical experiments” and “modes of transport” would make the discussion clearer and more academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if a person is not washing its hands,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer structures. Examples include “science has bring,” “the learning facility … become,” “People needs,” and “we needs,” which show problems with verb forms and subject–verb agreement. Articles and sentence construction are also unreliable in phrases such as “I completely agree with statement” and “we need to careful.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause. Practise accurate simple clauses first, then build longer sentences using controlled subordinate clauses and check agreement, tense and articles during revision.
