The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The ultimate goal of science and technology is to make people's lives easy. I totally agree with this statement as science and technology related to it, is progressing day-by-day and it is already making the lives of people easier and happier.

Science is used in every machinary that we are using in our houses, for instance, automatic washing machine, electric stove, electrical appliances and electrical vehicles. The progress and demand of scientific knowledge and purchasing items is increasing rapidly. For example, my mother has recently bought an automatic washing machine and her life is becoming easier as she does not need to wash clother traditionally.

The technology of science is present in almost every field and in everything. Recenty, all the manual cars are being replaced by electrical cars in different countries, for instance, China , Japan and USA. for example, Elon Musk has recently launched his flying car, it would make people's lives more easier in the future.

To conclude with, people have become very dependent on the science that they can not live without it, anyway, the science has a very bright future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you agree that science should make life easier, and the washing-machine example gives the response a relevant personal illustration. However, the task asks about science’s most important aim, while the essay mainly describes convenience and technology; it does not consider other possible aims or explain why improving lives should take priority. The examples of household appliances and electric cars are listed rather than developed, and the claim about a flying car is not explained or connected clearly to the argument. The conclusion repeats the general view without adding a reasoned summary. The response also does not meet the stated 250-word minimum, which limits the opportunity to develop and support the position. Extend the reasoning and explain each example’s significance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the examples are generally grouped by topic. However, progression is limited: both body paragraphs repeat the broad claim that science makes life easier, rather than building distinct supporting points. Linking phrases such as “for instance” and “for example” are repeated, and the second paragraph’s “Recenty” sentence is followed by another example without a clear relationship between them. The conclusion’s “anyway” also does not create a logical summary. Use each paragraph to develop one reason, connect examples explicitly to that reason, and vary or reduce linking expressions so the organisation feels less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “scientific knowledge,” “automatic washing machine,” and “electrical cars.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repetitive, such as “technology of science,” “making the lives of people easier,” and repeated references to “science” and “people’s lives.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “machinary,” “clother,” and “Recenty,” which reduce accuracy. Some choices are awkward for the intended meaning: “make people’s lives easy” would be more natural as “improve people’s quality of life.” Build a wider set of precise terms for benefits and impacts, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Most sentences are simple, and the response attempts some longer structures, but these are often faulty. For example, “I totally agree with this statement as science and technology related to it, is progressing” has an unclear clause structure and incorrect punctuation. In “my mother has recently bought an automatic washing machine and her life is becoming easier,” the tense combination is awkward; a consistent present-perfect construction would be clearer. Other errors include “it would make people’s lives more easier,” where the comparative is incorrectly formed, and “people have become very dependent on the science that they can not live without it,” where the clause connection and pronoun reference are unclear. Practise accurate compound and complex sentences, and check agreement, articles, verb forms and punctuation.
