Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern society, science is one of the most prominent factor contributing to the quality of life. Most people argue that the most important aim ofscience should be to improve people's lives. I completely agree with this statement.

For instance, many of the groundbreaking science discovery such as bacteria led to the improvement of people's health. For example, the discovery of bacteria is most significant in today medicine studies. Scientists found out that not all bacteria are harmful to the human body. What more surprsing is the fact the most bacteria are benifical to human with only around 10 percent of bacteria bringing harm to human body. Without this discovery, people wouldn't have penicillin or other antibiotics that had be harvested from bacteria.

Another example would be the internet. Nowaday, the communication of the whole society is runned by internet. Before the internet, people are restricted from contacting your friends or families due to the cost and inconvenience of delivering a letter. Because of the internet, you could call your family on the other side of the planet with just a couple taps on your devices. This completely changes the way we communicate. The discovery of internet did not only affect our communication but also brought the beginning of social media. Social media is one of the most notable feature of a modern society.

I could go on and on about how science improve our lives and it will not end. With all the informations given above, it is safe to say that science is improving our lives and our societies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that science should aim to improve people’s lives. Both examples—the medical value of bacteria and the internet’s effect on communication—are relevant and help explain your view. However, the first example contains a potentially confusing claim: you connect the discovery of bacteria with penicillin and antibiotics without explaining the distinction between identifying bacteria and developing treatments. The internet paragraph also focuses mainly on convenience and social media, so its wider contribution to people’s lives could be explained more fully. To strengthen the response, develop each example with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and briefly acknowledge why other scientific aims might matter, while maintaining your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present examples, and a final paragraph restates the central idea. The examples are grouped sensibly, and phrases such as “For instance” and “Another example” help signal progression. However, the final paragraph mostly repeats the claim rather than drawing the examples together, and “I could go on and on” is conversational and does not advance the argument. Some references are unclear, as in “This completely changes the way we communicate,” where “This” could refer to the internet or the ability to call family. Use more precise linking and referencing, and make the conclusion synthesise the two examples rather than simply asserting the point again.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “groundbreaking,” “antibiotics,” “communication,” and “social media,” which allows you to discuss both medicine and technology. Some attempts at more specific language are effective, but inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the writing less natural. Examples include “science discovery,” “today medicine studies,” “runned by internet,” and “the most notable feature.” There are also spelling errors such as “surprsing,” “benifical,” and “Nowaday.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they limit precision. Check spelling and word forms carefully, and learn common combinations such as “scientific discoveries” and “the internet has transformed communication.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “Without this discovery, people wouldn’t have penicillin” and a sentence beginning “Because of the internet.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “one of the most prominent factor” needs a plural noun, while “Scientists found out that not all bacteria are harmful” shifts from the past reporting verb to the present without a clear reason. In “Before the internet, people are restricted,” the tense does not fit the past-time context. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, such as “the discovery of internet.” Review agreement, tense consistency, and article use, then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
