IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Development of human life should be considered as the main goal of science. In my opinion, I fully agree with this statement, as technologies are invented to reduce people's difficulties, which will be explained in this essay.
Advancements in science made people's activities easier than before by eliminating some problems, as people suffered for these challenges. For example, the invention of aeroplane reduced the commuting time while travelling to a foreign country. In the previous century, people had to travel by ships, when they were visiting other countries. It took almost many days or motnhs due to travelling and caused many diffuculties for people such as higher cost, exhaustion, communication difficulties. But after flight was invented, commuting time has reduced significantly, which is beneficial for travelers because it offers a relaxing journey, quicker communiication and low cost due to decreased commuting time. So, science improved people's lives, which is the most important aim of science.
Moreover, discovery of internet plays a vital role in globalization, as it connects people from the whole world. For example, social medias such as, facebook, twitter, instagram, whats app offers the opportunity to communicate with people, who live in abroad. This is because, everyone can connect with the people of other countries through this platform and can share their cultures by talking or chatting. As a result, the communiation is established globally, which emphasizes globalization. Therefore, science develops people's lives.
In conclusion, many innovation took place due to science and it made human's life easier previously. Therefore, improvement of people's life should be the main aim of science.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you fully agree that improving people’s lives should be science’s main aim. Both body paragraphs give relevant examples—the aeroplane making international travel quicker and the internet enabling communication across countries—and the conclusion returns to your central view. This addresses the task, but the support is unevenly developed. The travel example explains practical benefits such as reduced time and exhaustion, while the internet paragraph mainly describes social media and cultural exchange without explaining as fully how these benefits establish science’s most important aim. Develop the reasoning further and acknowledge, if relevant, that science also pursues knowledge or other goals, then explain why human welfare should take priority.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas progress from travel to global communication, and signposts such as “For example,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This is a coherent arrangement, and the examples are generally placed where they support the relevant point. To make the progression more natural and cohesive, reduce repeated summary statements such as “science improved people’s lives” and “Therefore, science develops people’s lives.” Some links are mechanical, and references such as “this platform” after a list of several social-media services could be clearer. Use more varied transitions and make the relationship between each example and the main claim explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “advancements,” “commuting time,” “globalization” and “communication.” However, the range and precision are limited by repeated general words such as “people,” “science” and “life,” as well as several inaccurate or unnatural choices. For instance, “development of human life” is not a natural way to express improving people’s lives, and “communication is established globally” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “motnhs,” “diffuculties” and “communiication” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make the argument clearer and more fluent without changing its meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “as,” “while” and “because,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as the explanation that the internet “connects people from the whole world.” However, errors in agreement, articles, tense and sentence construction remain. For example, “many innovation took place” needs a plural noun and verb, while “discovery of internet” needs appropriate articles. In “people had to travel by ships, when they were visiting,” the comma and clause structure are awkward; “commuting time has reduced” also needs a more suitable tense and form. Review subject–verb agreement, articles and consistent past-tense narration, then proofread complex sentences.
