IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the contemporary world, countries spend enormous amounts of money on science and technology. While science could be used for the benefit of people, it can also be misused for destructive purposes. I completely agree that scientific knowledge should focus on the development of a country. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of scientific technology.
The main aim of science should be to improve healthcare and infrastructue. Nowadays, scientific knowledge is used in the development of advanced machinery that can diagnose and treat various health issues. Science is also used to reduce the treatment cost of various diseases. For example, few decades back, pneumonia was a fatal disease and there was no treatment available for the disease. However, now pneumonia is not considered as a fatal disease and its treatment is also affordable. Moreover, development in science has also improved our infrastructure. Earlier houses were build using clay and straws and they were not able to withstand heavy load and can only sustain loads from one or two floors, whereas now advanced materials and techniques are used to make superstructures that can handle extreme loads.
On the other hand, there are also certain destructive uses of science. One of the main concerns is that advanced technology is used to manipulate and scam people. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to create fake documents and videos to harass people to extort money from them. For instance, in India, cyberfraud is increasing at a rapid rate. Cybercriminals use technology to identify vulnerable individuals and with the help of AI manipulate them to give their money. Moreover, science is also used to create dangerous weapons such as nuclear bomb, advanced drones and aircrafts. While these weapons should be used for defence purposes, they are increasingly used to commit genocide and cause widespread destruction.
In conclusion, science can be used for human benefit, including the development of infrastructure and healthcare, as well as for manipulation and mass killing. I believe it is only up to humans to decide whether science is used for constructive or destructive purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you agree that science should improve people’s lives, and you support this with examples from healthcare and infrastructure. The pneumonia example and the contrast between older and modern building materials make the benefits concrete. You also address the risks of misuse through cyberfraud and weapons, so the response engages with the topic rather than discussing science only in general. However, the essay promises to discuss “benefits and drawbacks” without fully explaining how those drawbacks affect your central position. The conclusion shifts towards saying humans decide how science is used, which is not quite the same as explaining why improving lives should remain its most important aim. Develop that distinction and extend a few examples to make the argument more fully reasoned.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and risks, and a conclusion. The progression within the healthcare and infrastructure paragraph is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “On the other hand” help readers recognise shifts. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, however, the links feel formulaic, and the relationship between the examples and the main argument could be made more explicit. For instance, after describing cyberfraud and weapons, explain how these risks qualify your agreement that science’s primary aim should be human welfare. The final paragraph summarises both sides but does not fully resolve their relationship. More precise referencing and a conclusion that directly returns to the stated position would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “diagnose and treat,” “infrastructure,” “vulnerable individuals,” and “widespread destruction.” These choices make the subject matter clear, and terms such as “cyberfraud” and “superstructures” show an attempt to use more specific language. Some word choices and collocations are less accurate or natural, however: “development of a country” is broad for the argument, “advanced technology is used to manipulate and scam people” is repetitive, and “commit genocide” is a very strong claim that would benefit from precise support. There are also spelling and form slips, including “infrastructue,” “build” where “built” is intended, and “aircrafts.” Aim for more exact phrasing and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses with “While” and relative clauses such as “that can diagnose and treat various health issues.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the longer sentences are generally manageable. Some grammatical errors remain, though they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Earlier houses were build” has an incorrect verb form, while “they were not able to withstand heavy load and can only sustain” shifts tense and has a number mismatch. The phrase “few decades back” also needs an article, and “a nuclear bomb” requires an article in the list. Review tense consistency, singular and plural agreement, and articles, especially in longer sentences. This would make your otherwise clear argument more controlled.
