IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely argued that the most crutial aim of science should be focused towards enchancing public's lives. I partially agree with the idea because science could assist human race to overcome alot of issues like finding the cure of diseases or viruses and can offer advance or better health care facilities ,but it also brings some drawbacks with it for instance, overutilization of natural resources and destroying natural habitat of flora and fona.
to begin with, development in science could play a paramount role in improving the lifestyle of homosapiens . firstly, enhancement in research and development in science could help us find the cure of diseases or viruses which are not curable in todays world. furthermore, enhancement in science could result in better healthcare facilities for people , which can have a good impact on their life by improving the life expectency. for example, if we look back into the time the science has underwent substancial development , development in RnD has helped the humans to get better facilities and hospitality.
in contrast, leaning more toward science have it's own drawbacks . In search of better facility and new technology we have exploited our natural resources and fossil fuels , which can have impact on our daily life by global warming , air pollution etc. furthermore, advancement in science requires alot of big green space for the experiments and research due to this more number of forests are getting destroyed which is habitat to alot of different species of plants and animals . for example- in a survey it was found that in last 2 decads the decline in forest line is greater compared with 19th century.
overall, in my opinion their shouls be a balance in development. science is important for us human begins as it serves better lifestyle but on the other hand it also have some major drawbacks , exploiting the natural ecosystem of distinct flora and fauna .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you partially agree because science can improve health and living standards, while also harming the environment. Both sides are relevant, and you support them with examples such as medical research, global warming and forest loss. This addresses the task, but the two sides are not developed equally. The benefits paragraph explains healthcare and life expectancy, although the example about past scientific development remains general. The drawbacks paragraph identifies resource use and habitat destruction, but does not explain how these harms should affect the priorities of science. To strengthen the response, clarify what “a balance” means in practice and develop one specific example on each side, showing how it supports your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a concluding position. The contrast between the two main arguments is easy to follow, and signposts such as “to begin with,” “in contrast” and “overall” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, the repeated use of “furthermore” and “for example” makes linking somewhat mechanical, and some references are vague, such as “this” in the sentence about forests being destroyed. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between claims and examples more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “healthcare facilities,” “natural resources,” “fossil fuels,” “global warming” and “habitat.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “paramount role” and “natural ecosystem,” which show ambition. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “focused towards enhancing,” “better facilities and hospitality,” and “leaning more toward science.” Spelling errors such as “crutial,” “enchancing,” “expectency” and “decads” also reduce precision, even though the main meaning remains understandable. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; using simpler wording precisely is more effective than choosing an ambitious phrase that does not fit.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which” and “if,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some sentence forms are effective, such as the explanation that scientific advances can improve healthcare and life expectancy. However, there are some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries. For example, “science … have” should use a singular verb, and “their shouls be a balance” contains an incorrect form and spelling. The opening sentence also runs several ideas together, while punctuation around commas is inconsistent. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and breaking long sentences into controlled clauses; this will improve accuracy without limiting your range.
