IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed by people that the sole purpose of science should be the betterment of human life and I also agree with this proposed statement.

To commence with, I strongly believe that the primary aim of science should be improvement life on earth. Science has made breakthroughs in health care sector by improving the life expectancy. For example, invention of antibiotics has facilitated people alot. Before its invention people used to die because of minor bacterial infections. However, with antibiotics we have significantly controlled the death rate. Additionally, scientists are now digging into the causative agents of cancer and trying hard to invent medications which can eradicate it completely.

To add more, science is also playing its vital role in our lives now by artificial intelligence. AI is now here to help students to learn difficult and core concepts efficiently. It is also assisting mentors, doctors, and everyone out there who is seeking help from it. This type of ease provided by science is really mind blowing. For example, now doctors can diagnose effeciently with the help of artificial intelligence. It is proposed that with the help of AI, rate of diagnosis has been increased by 90%. These positive contributions of science made us believe that it is working for the betterment of life. However, it is totally upto the people, how they use scientific innovations. Every invention has its pros and cons. It is totally dependent on people how they want to take advantage of it. For instance, students these days use artificial intelligence for making their assignments and such type of complete dependence on AI is limitizing students to use their potential.

To conclude with, I have firm belief that the aim behind any scientific invention is to improve the standard of life. However, it is also associated with the people that how they are going to use them either positively or negatively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that science should improve human life, and the conclusion restates this view. The healthcare examples—antibiotics and cancer research—are relevant and explain how science can improve health and longevity. You also address AI’s benefits and the risk of misuse, so the response covers the task and shows some awareness of a qualification. However, the discussion is not equally developed: the AI benefits are asserted broadly, and the claim that diagnosis rates have increased by 90% is not explained or contextualised. The point about misuse shifts towards how people use inventions rather than examining whether improving lives should be science’s most important aim. Develop that distinction and support key claims more carefully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, with ideas generally moving from healthcare to AI and then to possible misuse. Linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “For example” and “However” help signal relationships between points. This gives the essay an overall coherent arrangement. At times, though, transitions feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “To commence with,” “To add more” and “To conclude with.” Some references are also unclear: “This type of ease” and “these positive contributions” require the reader to infer exactly which benefits are meant. The final paragraph repeats the position without adding a final synthesis. Use more natural transitions and make links between claims and examples explicit to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “life expectancy,” “bacterial infections,” “causative agents” and “artificial intelligence.” These choices allow you to discuss both medical research and technology, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, but some collocations and word forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “improvement life,” “facilitated people alot,” “limitizing students” and “firm belief.” Spelling slips, including “effeciently,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations rather than translating ideas word by word: for example, “improve people’s lives” and “restrict students’ use of their own abilities.” More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “before,” “however” and “that,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following your meaning. Examples include “should be improvement life,” which needs a grammatical subject or a different construction, and “it is totally upto the people, how they use,” where the clause structure and punctuation are faulty. In “it is also associated with the people that how they are going to use them,” the sentence pattern is difficult to control. Review articles, prepositions and clause formation, and check punctuation around introductory phrases. Greater accuracy in these patterns, alongside your existing sentence variety, would improve control.
