Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You take a position in favour of science improving people’s lives, and you give relevant examples involving faster travel and medicine. You also introduce a second idea about weapons and peace, so the response engages with the question. However, the position is not consistently expressed: the opening is difficult to interpret, and the weapons point complicates your argument without explaining how weapons reliably improve lives. The examples are brief and are not developed with explanation or specific detail. The response also contains 193 words, below the required 250, which limits the opportunity to address the question fully. Develop two or three relevant reasons, explain each one, and make your degree of agreement clear from the introduction through to the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic essay shape, with an opening, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “An other point,” and a concluding sentence. This gives the reader some indication of how the response is organised. However, progression between ideas is not always clear: the opening repeats the claim about improving lives, while the shift from everyday benefits to weapons is abrupt and its connection to the main position is not explained. Several sentences run together, and linking expressions such as “in qdition” and “for example” do not consistently make the relationships between ideas clear. Use one focused paragraph for each reason, connect examples explicitly to the claim they support, and check sentence boundaries and referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “significant goal,” “medic,” “disease,” “weapons,” and “peace,” and you attempt to express ideas about travel, health, and safety. However, the range is limited and many spelling errors make the message harder to understand, as in “dennaying,” “impove,” “explorig,” and “threten.” Some word choices or combinations are unclear or unnatural, such as “win time and effort” and “improve in weapons.” These issues sometimes require the reader to infer your meaning. Build a reliable set of topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations carefully; for example, say “save time and effort” and “develop defensive technology” where those meanings are intended.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to use both simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “While” and an example introduced by “For example.” However, the range is limited, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty or incomplete. Errors in sentence structure and punctuation appear throughout, such as “There are no dennaying the fact…” and the run-on opening that begins “While its commonly held…”. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and verb forms, for example “the most significant goal for science” and “scientist made a huge effort.” These frequent errors can make the intended relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
