IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Environmental problems are increasing nowadays. Lot's of people believe that loosing the specific animal species or plants is a major climate problem of current time. While some argues that there are some other vital environmental problems we should focus. This essay is about discussion of both concerns, reasons and a clear outcome.

To begin with, many wildlife creatures and plants lost their habitat and evantually extinct. This is because of the mankind, due to the needs of space for living we cut the forests. In addition, for the mass production of human resources- important for comfortable living we established industrialization which needs large areas of land and deforestation. For example, according to NAPC- national animal protection commitee, 50 speacies of animals are at the extinction due to the human interfearance in their habitat.

At the same side, due to the large industries, pollution has been increased: water pollution, soil pollution, air pollution and sound pollution. This is a bad development for the next generation to survive. In addition, the population is increasing day-by-day too at the same time. This demands a large amount of resources for life and space of living too. Also, the amount of waste is increasing too due to the population explosion. For example, according to WHO- world health organization, the popualtion and waste production has been increased by 200 per cent vis-`a-vis last century. This is a vital threat for human being and environment.

To conclude, the loss of wild animals and plant species is a environmental problem of current time; Besides that there are other problems: increasing pollution, waste production and population explosion are the vital environmental problems too for the mankind and earth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views: the first body paragraph explains habitat loss and extinction, while the second identifies pollution, population growth and waste as other serious concerns. The examples about deforestation and industrial land use are relevant, and your conclusion recognises the importance of both sides. However, the task asks you to give your own opinion, and your position is not clearly stated: the conclusion lists problems but does not say which you consider the main environmental concern or how the two views compare. Some points, such as the effects of pollution on future generations, are asserted rather than explained. State your view directly in the introduction and conclusion, then develop each main reason with a clear consequence or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views and a conclusion. This makes the overall arrangement easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In addition” and “To conclude” help indicate progression. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise: “At the same side” does not clearly introduce the contrasting view, and “Besides that” in the conclusion makes the relationship between the ideas awkward. The introduction promises a “clear outcome,” but the conclusion does not deliver a definite position. Improve cohesion by using accurate contrast markers and by linking each example explicitly to the point it supports; clearer referencing would also help readers follow the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “habitat,” “deforestation,” “industrialization,” “pollution” and “waste production,” so the subject is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “vital threat.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors reduce precision: “wildlife creatures,” “human resources” where you mean resources for people, and “at the extinction” are not natural expressions. Misspellings such as “speacies,” “interfearance” and “popualtion” are noticeable. Build a more accurate set of environmental collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish species loss from broader environmental pressures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure beginning “This is because of…” and a sentence with “which needs large areas of land.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to process. For example, “some argues” should use a plural verb, while “a environmental problem” needs the correct article. The opening fragment “While some argues…” is not joined to a complete main clause, and “the population and waste production has been increased” has problems with agreement and verb form. Practise building complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles and tense before adding complex clauses.
