IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Loss of flora and fauna is the most important environmental problem in current world according to a bunch of people while others think there are even more important problems in our environment which needs our attention. I agree the loss of flora and fauna is one of the major concerns in our world right now but there are equally important problems worth our attention.
The plants and animals are a very important part of the Earth's ecosystem and are now being threatened to extinction beacuse of rapid industrialization and urbanisation. The biggest forest on the planet earth called the Amazon Forest in South America has been cut down significantly for farming which has lead to the extinction of many ancient trees over 250 years old and has resulted in loss of habitat of many animals making them endangered. The loss of trees and forest will result in lesser rains which will cause droughts and present a great deal of problem to the farmers, on the large scale with lesser rains the prices of food items will go up and as we know the quality of air will worsen without plants in our ecosystem. Animals play a very important part too because humans and animals are co dependent on each other in the eco system and we rely on animal meat for food, Alot of animals we dont think much about play a very important role in keeping the ecosystem going. An example of extinction of animal because of less attention is the famous Tasmanian Tiger from Australia .
There are other problems equally important which requires our attention like the pollution being caused by the factories and vehicles decreasing the quality of air by releasing toxic gases in the environment , On the grandscale of things the pollution being caused by us leads to puncture of the ozone layer allowing the ultra violet rays to enter the atmosphere of earth, ultra violet rays entering the earth today causes alot of skin diseases and the pollution is warming up the earth causing global warming . Global Warming causes melting of the big glaciers in Antarctica which can lead to increase of sea levels and submerging all the land on earth.
I agree with people saying loss of animals and plants is the most important and also with the people who say there are other problems equally important because in both the scenarios the earth will suffer gravely and can lead to end of life on the planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and give a clear, consistent position: species loss is a major concern, while other environmental problems are equally important. The examples of Amazon deforestation and the Tasmanian tiger make the first view relevant, and pollution, ozone damage and global warming address the alternative. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that pollution causes “puncture of the ozone layer” and that this could lead to “submerging all the land on earth” is imprecise and overstated, weakening the support for your argument. The discussion of species loss is more developed than the case for other problems. Explain the mechanisms more accurately and develop each side with a focused example to make the reasoning clearer and more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph on species loss, one on other environmental problems, and a conclusion that restates your view. This logical structure helps the reader follow the discussion, and links such as “while,” “because,” and “There are other problems” signal relationships between ideas. The progression within paragraphs is less controlled, however. The first body paragraph moves from deforestation to rainfall, food prices, air quality and animal dependence in a long sequence, while the second combines pollution, ozone depletion and climate change without clearly separating their links. Some transitions feel mechanical, and references such as “both the scenarios” are broad. Use shorter, more focused units and explicit cause-and-effect links to strengthen the already coherent organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “habitat,” “endangered,” “toxic gases,” and “global warming,” which allows you to discuss both sides of the issue. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “co-dependent” and “ultra violet rays.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, though: “a bunch of people” is unsuitable for an academic essay, “lesser rains” is unnatural, and “puncture of the ozone layer” does not express the intended idea precisely. Spelling and form errors such as “beacuse,” “Alot,” and “grandscale” also reduce control. Choose more conventional academic phrasing, check spelling, and use precise environmental terminology rather than relying on dramatic or vague expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “which will cause droughts” and “which can lead to increase of sea levels.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and long sentences make control less secure. For example, “the loss of flora and fauna … needs our attention” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “has lead to the extinction” uses the wrong verb form. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention: “in current world” and “the famous Tasmanian Tiger from Australia .” are not well controlled. Several sentences join multiple independent ideas with commas, particularly in the deforestation paragraph. Practise accurate agreement and verb forms, and divide long sentences into clearer clauses with appropriate punctuation.
