IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that extinction of particular plants and animals species is the major environmental issue in our time while others consider climate change is one of the vital environmental problems. I strongly agree with the latter view.

On the one hand, one of the major environmental problems in the recent time is extinction of specific plant and animal species. The main reason of their loss is hunting the animal illegally and cutting down the plant without consideration. Another reason of their disappearance is loss of habitats. As a result, there is a disruption of food chain in wild life and loss of other specieses that depend on them. For example, palm trees are experiencing extinction and a bird making nest on them also experiencing loss of their habitats.

On the other hand, climate change is one of the most critical environmental issues in the years. There are a lot of reasons behind it. Burning fossil fuel in industries, power plants, and other places is one of the pivotal reasons. Climate change causes dramatic change in agriculture reducing crop production significantly. Extreme salinity in coastal regions and drought in the high lands are the consequences of the climate change. Consequently, people around the world are facing challenges regarding food security. For example, due to high temperature in the northern part of Bangladesh, significant amount of crops are being lost every year. That is why I firmly agree that climate change should be focused more than other environmental problems.

In conclusion, though there are a lot of environmental problems that we are facing such as loss of particular species of plants and animals, I strongly consider climate change is one of the major problems that we should address.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear position: the introduction says you agree more with the view that climate change is a major problem, and the conclusion reinforces this. The response also gives relevant reasons and examples, including habitat loss and the effects of high temperatures on crops in Bangladesh. This meets the task well, with some elements showing the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the species-loss discussion is less developed: the palm-tree example is unclear and does not explain which species are threatened or how the effects spread. The climate-change paragraph is more fully supported, but could explain more precisely how the listed impacts make this problem more important overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The contrastive signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, while “As a result” and “Consequently” show cause and effect. This coherent arrangement supports the argument. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Another reason of their disappearance” does not clearly identify the species being discussed, and the palm-tree example moves quickly from trees to a bird without explaining the link. The conclusion largely repeats the position rather than drawing the two sides together. More precise referencing and smoother links between claims and examples would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “habitats,” “fossil fuel,” “crop production,” and “food security.” These choices make the environmental discussion clear, and phrases such as “dramatic change” and “significant amount” show an attempt to use more specific language. Some less common expressions are inaccurate or awkward, however: “plant and animal specieses” has an incorrect plural form, “in the recent time” is not a natural collocation, and “extreme salinity in coastal regions” needs clearer context. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “wild life” and “high lands.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and forms so that your vocabulary is both varied and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result” and “Consequently,” and a subordinate clause beginning “though” in the conclusion. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “climate change is one of the vital environmental problems” needs an article or a different construction, while “a bird making nest on them also experiencing” lacks a finite verb and has an incomplete noun phrase. In “Burning fossil fuel … is one of the pivotal reasons,” the singular/plural pattern is inconsistent. There are also issues with articles, agreement, and sentence construction in places. Review these patterns and aim to make complex sentences complete and controlled.
