IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
While many agree the extinction of wildlife and nature to be the most alarming issue regarding our environment, many others point to different concerns that they believe must be taken care of. I will discuss, consider, and evaluate both views in this essay, and come to my own opinion by the end.
Those who are of the first position call attention to the fact that as every species contributes to the stablization of the environment they live in by participating in the food circle, the erasure of any one of them could destroy the ecosystem. To give an analogy, in a pond, small fish and insects, frogs, snakes, and birds form a food chain in above order. But if birds were to be removed from the place, the snake will have no natural predator and could seriously impact the population of the animals below it on the chain by devouring the rest of the animals.
The people who support the second opinion will point to the many other environmental problems we have been facing. As an example, there is the global warming; due to the considerable rise of planet's temperature since the Industrial Revolution, the icebergs at north and south poles have been melting, contributing to the increasing sea level. This threaten millions of people living in global cities near shores as these places can be underwater if the trend continues.
Personally, while both sides raise good points about their stands, I believe that environmental problems as a whole are deeply in need of consideration as its decaying will inevitably lead to humanity's downfall. We should strive to preserve the current dying animal and plant kinds as well as focusing on fixing many other issues regarding environment. If we do not, there will be no place to call home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The arguments are relevant, such as the mention of food chains and global warming. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on biodiversity could be more nuanced, and the conclusion is a bit generic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your arguments with more specific examples or deeper analysis of the implications of these environmental issues. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a positive aspect.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To give an analogy' and 'As an example', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother in places. For example, the transition between the food chain example and the conclusion of that paragraph could be more sophisticated. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extinction', 'ecosystem', and 'Industrial Revolution' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'stablization' (spelling) and 'food circle' (should be 'food chain' or 'web'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrases are slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are consistently academic in tone. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without significant difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are accurate, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'the icebergs at north and south poles' (missing articles) and 'This threaten' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'as its decaying will inevitably lead' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and refining your control over articles and subject-verb agreement.
