IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

With the continual deterioration of the environment, there is an ongoing debate on which is the most significant issue to tackle with in terms of environmental preservation. While some believe it to be the shrinking or even extinction of certain species, others point out that more dire issues are at hand. While both raise valid points, I personally believe that other issues, specially global warming, are more severe than species reduction.

It is understandable why the deminishing species diversity has raised the public attention since they can pose serious threats on certain ecosystems and the lives of human beings. For example, the number of large predators like wolves and tigers have experienced a sharp decline in several distinct ecosystems, leading to the over-population of smaller animals, which used to be their preys. The spread of these species take a toll on the vegetations of these areas, which results in destruction and even collapse of ecosystems in some regions. Considering the inevitable ramifications of these collapses on the environment and human lives, the loss of some species is undoubtedly a problem worth the public attention.

Nevertheless, other environmental issues, particularly global warming, have more far-reaching consequences. Global warming is predicted to cause a sharp and even irreversible rise of temperature, leading to the increase of extreme weathers and rising sea level. The issues have implications on human lives on a global scale while the extinction of certain species only affect a limited number of regions. Additionally, not only do these problems have more direct and visible implications on the lives of human beings and the environment, they also further exacerbrate the declining species diversity. With the rising temperature, for instance, numerous fragile plants and animals will find their living environment inhabitable and die.

In conclusion, though both sides have their merits, I believe global warming is the main environmental issue of the contemporary society, due to its serious impacts on the environment and society, and its role as a catalyst of other environmental issues, including loss of species.
