Student answer (Band 6.5)

The main idea of this essay relies on the major issues concerning the damage to the environment. People share different perspectives on this problem.

Many people believe that the environment is harmed because of the loss of some specific plants and animals. The primary reason for this devastation is deforestation or other natural disasters likely forest fires. Due to these causes, the plants are burnt, and large-scale calamities often make it extinct. Similarly, animal species sometimes even die, and their slightly gets reduced. For example, a polar bear that migrated to the warm region of the world would not be able to survive there since they are not adapted to that particular environment. This supports the claim that the loss of such vegetation and species causes a major impact on environmental issues. While others share a different point of view on the same.

In my opinion, what I believe about this difficulty is the pollution that affects the environment as well as the living organisms existing. It is also similar to the other way people view this scenario. According to a few people, air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution and even land pollution create environmental difficulties. The contaminated water or air released into the environment can affect both the organisms and the properties. Soil erosion can kill the micro-organisms existing on the land that are essential for the growth of the vegetation. Noise pollution can create disturbance in the environment, and it also becomes difficult to tackle that irritating noise. For example, a street dog roaming on the road gets irritated due to the high volume of speakers or vehicular traffic. This can lead to hearing loss or dog life loss. This also results in the loss of animal life.

Overall, both types of ideas or thoughts are shared by people, which were later on also supported by relevant reasons and examples. The environmental problem has many factors that could be the reason altogether. It should have been solved by taking some prior steps to avoid it even before such a concern arises.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, fulfilling the main requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of how pollution affects the environment is a list of types rather than a deep analysis of why it might be considered a more significant problem than biodiversity loss. The polar bear example is slightly tangential, as it focuses on migration rather than the core issue of species extinction. To reach a higher band, you should focus on developing your arguments with more logical depth and clearer links to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. Phrases like 'While others share a different point of view on the same' are incomplete and lack a clear connection to the preceding paragraph. Additionally, the transition between the discussion of species loss and the discussion of pollution could be smoother. While the overall progression is logical, the referencing and linking between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow of your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, but there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations. For example, 'their slightly gets reduced' is unclear and grammatically incorrect, and 'dog life loss' is not a standard English expression. You attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'deforestation' and 'soil erosion,' which is good, but you need to ensure these terms are used in the correct context. Expanding your range of academic collocations and refining your word choice will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'what I believe about this difficulty is the pollution' and 'It should have been solved by taking some prior steps'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering the basics of sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb tenses, which will allow your more complex ideas to be expressed more accurately.
