Student answer (Band 7.0)

Over the past few decades environmental issues have become an major global concern. Although environmental change have severely affected many plant and animal species, some people beleive that other problems affecting human are more urgent. In my opinion considering environmental issues like climate change is more crucial as it is the root cause of many environmental issues affecting plants, animals as well as human. In my opinion, addressing environmental issues such as climate change is more crucial because they are the root cause of many threats to plants, animals and human beings.

Nowadays, many people are concerned about the issues faced by plants and animals as a result of environmental changes around the globe. Some plants species are near to extinction because of changes in environment such as increased temperatures and water scarcity. Similarly, many animal species are decreasing in population as a result of affects caused by rising temperatures and damage to their natural habitat. Moreover, rising pollution is also affecting plant and animal population on land as well as in oceans resulting in death of sea creatures. Therefore, it is important to address theses issues.

On the other hand, if we look more closely, climate change is a much bigger environmental threat for all living beings on the earth. While it is the root cause of most of the environmental challenges faced by the world, it is still underestimated for the damages it is causing around the globe. Climate change is rapidly changing the lives of people, animals and plants by causing changing weather patterns, decrease in rainfall, increase in flooding and frequent heatwaves. For example, the reduction in rainfall is pushing the world towards water scarcity which will ultimately affect not only human but will also affect animal and plants. Similarly, frequent heat waves are increasing annual number of deaths among human while causing many plants and animal to die simultaneously.

In my opinion, animal and plants are affected subsequently because of climate change. If would successfully address the issues related to climate change that will ultimately improve the survival of both, plants and animals. Therefore, it's more important and urgent to take immediate action against climate for the larger good.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the loss of species and the broader issue of climate change. You maintain a clear position throughout, arguing that climate change is the root cause of environmental degradation. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples like water scarcity and heatwaves. However, the introduction contains a repetitive sentence where you restate your opinion twice, which slightly impacts the flow. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the argument without unnecessary repetition, and ensure your position is consistently integrated rather than restated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the transition between the first and second paragraph is slightly abrupt due to the repetitive opening. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'extinction', 'water scarcity', and 'habitat'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'affects' instead of 'effects' (e.g., 'result of affects caused by'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly repetitive. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that word forms (nouns vs. verbs) are used accurately in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('environmental change have', 'some plants species', 'many plants and animal to die') and minor punctuation errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater accuracy.
