Student answer (Band 6.5)

The rising concerns of environmental issues are breathtaking as the number of problems keep stacking up. To insure sustainability we will have to tackle these issues as soon as possible.

People argue that the main issue is the loss of particular species of plants and animals while others argue that there are more important environmental problems.

The loss of species of plants and animals does raise a flag as the people on earth should preserve these delicacies given to us for our generations to come. However, debating on which issue is the most talked about right now wont be the solution as addressing the roots to these problems should be at the top of the list. Discussing and solving other issues like pollution desertification ,global warming and preserving the environment could eventually lead us down the right path in identifying and eradicating the problems.

In conclusion I believe addressing these other problems should be the right motive and can eventually lead us in solving global issues like the loss of particular species of plants and animals. For example , the killing of marine life due to contaminated waters can only be solved if we first identify the root cause. In this case the excessive dumping of garbage in the ocean is the cause, coming up with new ways for the right disposal of waste to get rid of this pollution should be the first step.

There are many other examples that could be brought up in favor of addressing more important environmental problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument, but the development is quite limited. While you mention the loss of species and the need to address root causes like pollution, the arguments remain superficial. The prompt asks for a discussion of both views, but your exploration of why some people consider species loss the 'main' problem is very brief. To reach a higher band, you need to provide more specific reasons and examples for both perspectives. Your own opinion is clear, but the supporting arguments lack the depth and detail required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. While the progression of ideas is logical, the overall flow feels a bit disjointed. Improving the variety of transition signals (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. You use some good terms like 'sustainability', 'desertification', and 'eradicating', but there are also instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'raise a flag' (usually 'raise a red flag') and 'delicacies given to us'. The word choice is functional but rarely demonstrates the flexibility or sophistication needed for a band 7 or above. Focus on learning collocations and more academic synonyms for common words to improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the number of problems keep' (should be 'keeps') and 'debating on which issue... wont be' (should be 'won't'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and the lack of an apostrophe in 'wont'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor mechanical errors.
