Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent decades, as the rapid development of urban cities and the construction of industrialism, which significantly raise the global economy as well as create a better living condition, especially in developing-countries. However, there is an going debate on whether these current factors or other natural issues contribute to the environmental degradation. In my view, both issues are major elements in destroying the flora and fauna system of the world.

On the one hand, a wide range of industrial activities may lead to a decrease in natural settings. The emission of many kinds of smokes and gases from the manufacturing progresses is one of the main problem of our time, which negatively affects our mental and physical health such as respiratory system or metabolism. This factor not only creates a crucial impact on human but also the loss of particular species of plants and animals, by dumping chemical wastes to rivers or ocean, a number of marine creatures can experience a dramatical drop in general. Moreover, the rich nutrition in soil and dirt would be contaminated with toxic substances. Causing the death of plants and trees nearby industrial areas.

On the other hand, in terms of other environmental problems, they are also dominating a large percentages of influencing fauna and flora systems. For example, climate change, an vital issue caused by the global warming, has been a worldwide concern. This not only impacts on certain types of animals and plants by destroying their habitats and population but also creates an important problem in human's daily life. As raising people's concern about the change of global pace and the whole world's economy because they need to spend an enormous amount of money to resolve environmental degradation, which could lead to the fluctuation of taxes and time consuming.

In conclusion, in modern era, there are a lot of major environmental problem that causing the loss of particular species of plants and animals. However, existing a large number of global issues which not only affects natural habitats but also human's daily lives. To tackle this problems, a more sustainable method should be introduced by environment and urban planners in order to build a livable world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the impact of industrial activities is discussed, the explanation of why other environmental problems might be 'more important' is less clearly articulated. The essay tends to conflate the two views rather than contrasting them sharply. For instance, the second body paragraph discusses climate change but does not explicitly argue why it might be considered a more significant threat than species loss. To reach a higher band, ensure that each viewpoint is distinct and supported by more specific, logical reasoning rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'existing a large number of global issues' in the conclusion, which lacks a clear link to the previous sentence. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack clear logical flow, such as the opening sentence which is a dependent clause without a main verb. Improving the variety and precision of linking words will enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations. For example, 'construction of industrialism' is not standard English, and 'dramatical drop' should be 'dramatic drop'. Phrases like 'the rich nutrition in soil' are also slightly unnatural. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'environmental degradation' and 'flora and fauna', the lack of precision in word forms and collocations limits the score. Focusing on learning word families and common collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. The first sentence is a sentence fragment, lacking a main clause. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'a vital issue' (should be 'an') and 'this problems' (should be 'these problems'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb is recommended.
