Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address both views, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack depth. The introduction is vague, and the conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence. The student provides a basic overview of the two perspectives but fails to clearly state or maintain a consistent personal opinion throughout the essay. To improve, the student must expand on their points with more detailed explanations and ensure the essay reaches the required length to fully explore the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by the lack of depth and the incomplete conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Initially,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition,' but they are often used mechanically or incorrectly (e.g., 'Then' is used inappropriately as a transition). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences is disjointed. The paragraphing is present, but the abrupt ending suggests a lack of planning and control over the structure of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'major issue,' 'environment,' and 'diseases.' There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'amount of plants and animals are reduces' and 'good production of crops could not possible.' The student struggles to use less common vocabulary effectively, and the phrasing often sounds unnatural. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and improving their understanding of word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Environment get affect,' 'level of global warming are increased') and article usage. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and comma usage. The errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, indicating a need for a stronger grasp of basic sentence construction and grammatical rules.
