IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that the cause of environmental problem of our period is by loss of specific species of plants and animals, others assume that there are more significant environmental problems.

ecosystem today is facing a decline in both plants and animal species due to the activities of man. Human beings have caused a serious dent in the ecosystem by causing deforestation and global warming, living organisms in the wild life find it difficult to adapt to the sudden change in their environment causing them to meet their untimely demise. It leads to extinction of some of the animals and plants. another reasons is the pollution from many industries. industries release harmful smokes and chemicals to the environment which pollute the air, water and land killing fishes, birds and terrestrial organisms.

However, there are more crucial problems in the environment which can led to the extinction of plants and animals in the ecosystem. Evolution is one of the many, some of this species evolve to adapt to their environment some may become fewer due to the necessity to survive and this may cause a decrease in their number. Evolution has been one of the major reasons for decline. another reason is incompatibility, many living organisms find it hard to survive in a different environment, they may try to live in the strange surrounding but because of the difference in their genes and structure, they will most likely find it impossible to survive.

In my view, I do suggest that human activities cause a great loss of specific species and law of conservation should be applied in such areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument, but the development is uneven. While you identify human activities as a cause for species loss, the second body paragraph regarding 'evolution' and 'incompatibility' as alternative environmental problems is scientifically inaccurate and lacks logical depth. The prompt asks for a discussion of environmental problems, but your explanation of evolution as a 'problem' is confusing and does not effectively contrast with the first view. Your own opinion is stated in the conclusion, but it is brief and lacks the necessary justification to fully support your position. To improve, ensure your arguments are factually sound and clearly linked to the prompt's requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'another reason', but the transitions between sentences are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For instance, the link between 'evolution' and 'environmental problems' is not logically established, making the argument difficult to follow. Additionally, the lack of a clear topic sentence in the second paragraph makes it hard for the reader to grasp the main point immediately. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You use some relevant terms like 'deforestation', 'global warming', and 'terrestrial organisms', which is positive. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'cause a serious dent in the ecosystem' and 'meet their untimely demise', which sound unnatural. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'law of conservation' (which refers to physics) instead of 'conservation laws' or 'environmental protection policies'. Expanding your range of collocations and using more academic vocabulary would help convey your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'another reasons is'), punctuation errors, and missing articles. For example, 'industries release harmful smokes' should be 'smoke' (uncountable), and 'some of this species' should be 'these species'. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors in construction, such as 'some of this species evolve to adapt to their environment some may become fewer'. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score.
