Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that the main environmental problem is the loss of some particular species of plants and animals while others have opposed this view by stating that there are more significant environmental problems. We are going to discuss both point of views and explain why I personally believe that there are other major environmental issues.

A number of people say that the loss of particular species of plants and animals is the main environmental problem of our time. I strongly believe that this is a major issue and various multiple species of plants and animals have been erased from the surface of this planet and also a huge number of species are still endangered. Many particular plants and animals were an integral part of our ecosystem which should’ve have been protected at all costs. Their role in the overall functioning was of our ecosystem was of unmatched significance. But there are far more serious threats to our environment which needs to be urgently highlighted.

There are other major concerns which needs to be addressed as soon as possible for the betterment of our environment for example- day by day, increasing pollution is constantly harming the ozone layer of our planet. Certain measures are required to prevent this damage. Significant number of species of animals and plants are still endangered for instance, cheetah is a highly endangered animal and Bengal tigers are also an endangered species. These animals are a prominent part of the wildlife. Many varieties of plants are in significant danger as of now and are on the verge of extinction which needs to be saved for our future generations.

In my opinion, extinction of certain species of plants and animals happened in the past is a major loss to our environment but there is nothing that we can do about it. On the other hand, we can still take measures to prevent various other species from extinction. And also some issues like the damaging ozone layer needs urgent attention from world organisations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that other environmental issues are more pressing, such as the ozone layer, the explanation remains superficial. For instance, you state that 'there is nothing that we can do' about past extinctions, which is a somewhat simplistic argument. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed reasoning or specific evidence regarding why issues like climate change or pollution are more urgent than biodiversity loss. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack depth and analytical rigor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'for instance', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the two main body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'particular species of plants and animals'. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'ecosystem', 'extinction', and 'endangered'. However, there is a lack of variety, and some phrasing is repetitive. For example, you use the phrase 'particular species of plants and animals' multiple times. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'various multiple species', which is redundant. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms and academic collocations to express your ideas with greater sophistication and avoid repeating the same word clusters throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'other major concerns which needs to be addressed' should be 'need to be addressed' (subject-verb agreement), and 'should’ve have been protected' is incorrect. Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the use of a hyphen instead of a colon or comma after 'for example'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage.
